What is a Contract 508 Tester?

A Contract 508 Tester is a professional who evaluates digital products and services, such as websites, software, and documents, to ensure they meet Section 508 accessibility standards. These standards require that federal agencies' electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities. To thrive as a Contract 508 Tester, you need a solid understanding of Section 508 compliance, accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and experience in accessibility testing, typically backed by relevant certifications or coursework. Proficiency with assistive technology tools (like JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver), automated testing platforms, and reporting systems is commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for identifying and conveying accessibility issues to development teams. These skills ensure digital content is accessible to all users, helping organizations meet legal requirements and promote inclusivity.

What are some common challenges Contract 508 Testers face when ensuring digital accessibility compliance?
