Contract 3D Designer information

What is a contract 3D designer?

Contract 3D Designers are professionals who create three-dimensional visualizations, models, or animations for clients on a contract or freelance basis. They typically work on a variety of projects, such as product prototypes, architectural renderings, video game assets, or marketing materials. Instead of being full-time employees, contract 3D designers are hired for specific projects or time periods, offering flexibility to both themselves and their clients. Their work often involves using specialized software like Blender, 3ds Max, or Maya to bring ideas to life digitally. The demand for contract 3D designers spans industries like entertainment, architecture, advertising, and manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract 3D designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract 3D Designer, you need strong 3D modeling, rendering, and visualization skills, typically backed by a degree in design, architecture, or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as Autodesk 3ds Max, Blender, Maya, or SketchUp, and familiarity with rendering engines like V-Ray or Unreal Engine, are essential. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication help you interpret client needs and collaborate remotely with diverse teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, on-time design solutions that meet client specifications in a competitive, project-based environment.

What are some common challenges contract 3D designers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract 3D Designers often juggle several projects at once, each with unique requirements and deadlines. Balancing client expectations, adapting to different design styles, and managing overlapping timelines can be challenging. Clear communication, effective time management, and setting realistic milestones are essential for success. Additionally, Contract 3D Designers frequently need to quickly learn new workflows or software based on client needs, making adaptability a valuable asset.

What is the difference between Contract 3D Designer vs 3D Artist?

Job description

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

We're looking for a mid-level Environmental Graphic Designer who thrives at the intersection of graphic design and physical space. You design environments such as exhibit spaces, branded interiors, offices, trade show booths, and experiential activations. You bring the graphic language that makes them come alive. You have demonstrable real world experience and can produce polished, production-ready work yourself.

This is a hands-on design role. You'll concept, develop, and execute across the full lifecycle of a project, from early mood boards to vendor-ready files.

The ideal candidate has a strong eye for 3D and 2D design, is confident taking projects from concept to execution, communicates effectively, and thrives in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

Responsibilities
  • Design cohesive environmental graphic systems for exhibit spaces, branded offices, retail interiors, trade show booths, and experiential activations
  • Develop concepts through mood boards, 2D layouts, and 3D visualizations for renders and presenting concepts
  • Develop wayfinding systems, signage hierarchies, and large-format graphic programs that work at architectural scale
  • Apply and extend brand identities into physical environments, ensuring graphic and spatial elements feel unified
  • Produce all graphic assets: wall graphics, environmental typography, dimensional signage, floor graphics, window treatments, and display content
  • Read and work from architectural floor plans, elevations, and construction documents
  • Select materials and finishes in collaboration with fabricators and vendors, with an understanding of what can realistically be built within design parameters and budgets
  • Prepare and manage print-ready and fabrication-ready files to large-format specs
  • Collaborate with project managers, interior designers, architects, and producers to align creative with budget and timeline
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, experiential design, or related field
  • 5 years of experience in environmental graphic design, exhibit design, or branded interiors
  • A portfolio demonstrating both spatial thinking and strong graphic craft, show us work that exists in real spaces
  • Experience in visual and brand design
  • Expert proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
  • Solid understanding of large-format print production; substrates, bleed and safe zones, vendor specs, and file handoff
  • Experience reading architectural drawings and translating them into graphic design solutions
  • Familiarity with 3D visualization tools (SketchUp, Rhino, Blender, or similar) for concept development and client presentations
  • Working knowledge of materials, finishes, and fabrication methods for physical environments
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight, real deadlines
  • Clear, confident communication with clients, vendors, and cross-functional teams
  • Ability to travel internationally as needed
Desired
  • Motion design skills: animated content for digital signage, LED walls, or AV displays (After Effects, Premiere)
  • Experience with interactive or digital experience design
  • Retail and exhibition space design background
  • CAD drafting experience
You'll thrive here if you...
  • Take pride in seeing your design executed at full scale in a real space
  • Enjoy traveling for work
  • Are equally energized by big-picture concepts and the precision of production files
  • Can hold a design vision through the messiness of fabrication and installation
  • Communicate clearly and advocate for your work in front of clients and collaborators
  • Are curious about materials, space, and how people move through and experience environments
Additional Information

This is a temporary role, anticipated to last 6 months. The target base pay for this position is $50 - $69/hour. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
