Job Description

The Manufacturing Designer's objective is to produce accurate models or drawings based on WPI's area of work. The Manufacturing Designer should be able to work most assignments and projects with minimal assistance. The Designer reports directly to the BIM Manager.

  • The primary role will be to create models and drawings of manufacturing components using Autodesk Inventor.
    • Process/create parts lists or bill of materials for various assembly levels.
    • Proven experience resolving design, manufacturing, supplier, and field issues through structured modeling and drafting methods
    • Communicate, collaborate, and ensure an efficient transition from R&D programmatic design to production.
    • Contribute to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for technical documentation processes, focusing on continual improvement of department performance.
    • Prepare layouts for design collaboration, construction, lifting, transportation, assembly, and installation.
    • Efficient saving, naming, and CAD model vault interface.

Other work may include:

  • BIM Content Development for the project.
    • Create models related to WPI work.
      • Model WPI elements using Architect, Structural, and MEP backgrounds.
      • Develop models to illustrate contractor questions and solutions.
      • Distribute new and revised models showing changes and RFI answers.
    • 2D detailing for shop drawings.
      • This may include heavy steel, sheet metal and plastic parts.
    • Understand and comply with all WPI policies, procedures, and corporate safety programs.
    • Take direction from WPI construction and engineering team and translate to the model or drawing.
    • Ensure construction document accuracy based on other trades or designs such as architectural, structural, and MEP models.
    • Produce various documents or drawings for various requirements to support the project and field team.
    • Identify conflicts, incomplete or ambiguous design information.
    • Create new library components

Requirements

Basic Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma and/or GED.
  • Completion of a degree or certificate in CAD technology or equivalent.
  • Have a minimum of 2 of employment with a design or construction firm.

Minimum Requirements

  • Demonstrate the ability to read and understand plans and specifications
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgement, problem-solving ability, self-starting, and ability to prioritize based on relevant factors.
  • Ability to prioritize personal workload and recognize priority conflicts and seek guidance for resolution.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in team environment, multitask, think critically, and problem-solve.
  • Two years' work experience with Autodesk Inventor.

Preferred Requirements

  • Knowledge of BIM/VDC Technology & Other Software:
    • Revit
    • Navisworks (Manage)
    • Bluebeam
    • Solidworks
    • Procore, BOX, Dropbox, Sharepoint, Plangrid, Autodesk Forma
    • General understanding of interoperability between software used to accomplish own discipline tasks
  • Familiarity with data center or industrial construction.
  • Mechanical, Electrical, or Piping modelling
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14 drafting standards
