What is a Contract 2D Artist job?

A Contract 2D Artist is a freelance or temporary professional who creates 2D visual assets for projects such as video games, animations, marketing materials, or illustrations. They typically work on a per-project or fixed-term basis rather than as a full-time employee. Responsibilities include designing characters, environments, UI elements, and concept art according to client specifications. They may collaborate with art directors, game developers, or marketing teams to ensure artistic consistency. Contract 2D Artists must manage their schedules, deliver work on deadlines, and often work with multiple clients at once.

What is the typical workflow and collaboration process for a Contract 2D Artist working with a remote team?

As a Contract 2D Artist working remotely, you will generally receive project briefs and style guidelines from an art director or project manager, then create concept sketches and iterate based on feedback. Communication often happens through email, messaging platforms, and cloud-based project management tools, allowing for seamless collaboration with other artists, designers, and clients despite varying locations. Deadlines are usually set in advance, so strong organization and the ability to manage your own schedule are vital. You'll regularly share progress updates, accept revisions, and deliver final assets in required formats, making responsiveness and flexibility key to maintaining trust and delivering quality work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract 2D Artist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract 2D Artist, you need strong drawing skills, a keen eye for color and composition, and experience with digital illustration, often backed by a portfolio of completed projects. Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and sometimes specialized software like Clip Studio Paint is typically required, while formal art training or certification is a plus. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability help artists effectively handle feedback and meet tight deadlines in diverse client environments. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality artwork that meets client expectations and supports the success of creative projects.

Job description

We're looking for a CGI Artist who thrives at being both highly-creative and technical. You'll collaborate closely with fellow CGI Artists, Industrial Designers, and Program Managers to produce high-fidelity 3D assets, photorealistic renders, and captivating animations that will appear across our brand and marketing channels. You bring deep expertise in leading 3D modeling, rendering, and image editing software, and you thrive under tight deadlines without sacrificing quality. You're self-motivated yet collaborative, a strong communicator, and a sharp technical problem solver.

We're open to both full-time and contract opportunities.

Thuma’s Headquarters is based in the historic Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco. The role involves four days in the office each week and occasional additional days as needed.

In recognition of the personal and professional benefits that team members gain from time spent together in person, we organize a range of events throughout each year designed to bring our entire team together!

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce high-fidelity 3D materials and models of complex forms — including soft goods
  • Produce photorealistic renders and animations
  • Help streamline 3D pipelines and post-production workflows
  • Support storyboarding and image lists
  • Collaborate with render partners as needed
  • Manage external render projects as needed
This Might Describe You
  • You're deeply detail-oriented
  • Fluent in modern generative AI tools
  • Drawn to design and architecture
  • You work efficiently and independently
  • Push for quality without needing to be asked
  • You move fast and stay organized
  • Have strong problem-solving skills
  • Have strong  interpersonal skills
What You'll Need

Your portfolio reflects an exceptional eye for craft — the kind of elevated, editorially-driven work that defines brands known for setting the visual standard. You understand what it means to produce imagery with real art direction behind it: considered, polished, and unmistakably intentional. That level of taste and execution is what you bring to every project.

Additionally:

  • 3+ years of experience as a CGI Artist
  • Proficiency in Blender or confidence in becoming proficient within a 2-month timeframe
  • Ability to design and execute compelling motion graphics
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong color editing and correction skills
  • Experience using render farms
  • Skilled at working to a brief and hitting deadlines
  • Experience leading end-to-end 3D and 2D production workflows
  • A sharp eye for accurately scoping turnaround time
