What skills and qualifications are needed to be a continuous improvement program manager?

To thrive as a Continuous Improvement Program Manager, you need expertise in process improvement methodologies (such as Lean, Six Sigma), project management, and data analysis, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with process mapping tools, ERP systems, and certifications like Six Sigma Green or Black Belt are commonly required. Strong leadership, communication, and change management skills help drive engagement and sustain improvement initiatives across teams. These skills are vital for effectively identifying inefficiencies, implementing solutions, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the organization.

What challenges do continuous improvement program managers face when implementing process changes?

Continuous Improvement Program Managers often encounter resistance to change from team members accustomed to existing processes. Gaining buy-in across multiple departments requires strong communication and the ability to demonstrate clear benefits of proposed initiatives. Additionally, aligning improvement projects with organizational goals while managing limited resources can be challenging. Successful managers leverage data-driven insights, foster collaboration, and maintain flexibility to address these obstacles effectively.

They use methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, and Kaizen to identify areas for improvement and implement sustainable solutions. By driving these programs, they help organizations reduce costs, improve quality, and adapt to changing business environments.

Job description

This role leads the Continuous Improvement program for a core business unit and reports to the Director of Continuous Improvement.

The CI program itself is still early-stage and tactical today, centered on OEE metrics and quick, manageable mini-Kaizens, which means there's real room to build it out and make it your own.

You'll be the champion and subject-matter expert for the company's CI methodology: leading projects that eliminate waste, driving key KPIs, solving problems at the root cause, and coaching the team.

What You'll Own

  • CI Program Leadership — Serve as the champion and subject-matter expert for the company's continuous improvement program within your business unit; teach and coach stakeholders across the organization on lean/CI
  • MDI & Tier Meetings — Calculate metrics and drive daily sustainment of the Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) and Tier Meeting processes, and roll those processes out across the organization; lead meetings as required
  • KPIs & Tableau — Serve as the Tableau subject-matter expert and use it to improve the efficiency and accuracy of key KPI reporting; supply the data that drives decisions
  • OEE & Mini-Kaizens — Drive OEE improvement in key manufacturing areas, run mini-Kaizens for quick and manageable process gains, and lead root cause / corrective action sessions that implement permanent solutions
  • Efficiency Initiatives — Complete time studies and roll out line balancing, lead Agile-style sprints to drive quick KPI and process gains, and lead the rollout of 5S in key production areas
  • Team Development — Train the team on the tools and processes above to deepen understanding of lean/CI and support cultural change

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering preferred)
  • 3-7 years of manufacturing experience with a lean / industrial engineering / continuous improvement focus (or 2-3 years with a Master's)
  • Previous experience supporting the shop floor directly is required
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite; Excel required
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and lead meetings

Desired Characteristics

  • Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt preferred
  • Previous experience with Tableau preferred
  • Previous experience with Dynamics 365 preferred
  • Previous experience leading projects, especially using Agile methodology, preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish strongly preferred — important for day-to-day communication with the production workforce
