What is a continuous improvement engineer?

Continuous Improvement Engineers are professionals who analyze business processes and systems to identify areas for enhancement and increased efficiency. They use methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and Kaizen to implement changes that reduce waste, improve quality, and streamline operations. Their role often involves working with cross-functional teams, collecting and analyzing data, and leading projects that drive sustainable improvements. These engineers play a critical part in helping organizations remain competitive and responsive to market demands.

How does a continuous improvement engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive process enhancements?

Continuous Improvement Engineers frequently work alongside various departments, such as operations, quality, and supply chain, to identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements. They lead or participate in cross-functional teams, facilitating workshops like Kaizen events or root cause analyses to gather diverse perspectives. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as these engineers must align stakeholders on goals, coordinate action plans, and track progress. This collaborative approach ensures that improvements are sustainable and have buy-in from all relevant areas of the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a continuous improvement engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Continuous Improvement Engineer, you need a strong background in process optimization, data analysis, and problem-solving, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma methodologies, and tools such as Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, and statistical analysis software is typically required, with certifications like Lean Six Sigma being highly valued. Strong communication, collaboration, and change management skills help drive initiatives and engage cross-functional teams. These competencies are essential for successfully identifying inefficiencies, implementing solutions, and fostering a culture of ongoing improvement within organizations.

Job description

Here at Siemens, we take pride in enabling sustainable progress through technology. We do this through empowering customers by combining the real and digital worlds. Improving how we live, work, and move today and for the next generation! We know that the only way a business thrives is if our people are thriving. That's why we always put our people first. Our global, diverse team would be happy to support you and challenge you to grow in new ways. Who knows where our shared journey will take you?
Transform the everyday with us!
Are you an Engineer with a passion for innovation and a proven track record of excellence? Do you thrive in dynamic environments where you can shape processes from the ground up? If so, we invite you to join our team as a Continuous Improvement Engineer for our Operations Engineering team!
This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of establishing world-class engineering standards in a team that supports manufacturing in multiple locations across multiple countries. You will play a pivotal role in analyzing engineering workflows, elevate the engineering quality standards, and improving throughput. You will provide critical support to improve the quality of output from the engineering team, which is a crucial driver to scale up operations for the business unit. You will be directly responsible for modifying, establishing, and managing the quality control measures of our engineered-to-order (ETO) process, ensuring that custom drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and all design documents are flawless before they hit the production floor.
This hybrid Continuous Improvement Engineer role is based in Wendell, NC at Siemens EA U.S. headquarters. Located in the heart of the Research Triangle about 20 minutes east of Raleigh, Wendell offers top-rated schools, a mild climate, easy access to mountains and coast, and a cost of living that allows our compensation to go further. Local candidates are encouraged to apply. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.
You'll make a difference by:
  • Standardize ETO Quality Control: Own, modify, and closely implement the quality control measures for all engineered-to-order (ETO) deliverables, including 3D CAD models, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Proactive Defect Prevention: Implement Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) during the custom drafting phase to catch and mitigate engineering quality risks before production release.
  • Drive Root Cause Investigations: Lead structured Root Cause Analysis (RCA) using 8D, A3s, and 5-Why methodologies to trace shop-floor assembly or wiring defects back to the root design documents.
  • Close the Feedback Loop: Establish and handle a robust engineering change notice (ECN) process that feeds manufacturing floor realities directly into master CAD models, engineering templates, and design standards.
  • Error-Proofing: Work with design software administrators to implement digital error-proofing mechanisms within CAD, ERP/PLM tools, Artificial intelligence tools to automate rule-checking.
  • Quality Standards Implementation: Develop and implement rigorous quality standards for all phases of the ETO process.
  • Quality KPI Improvement: Lead efforts to continuously improve key Quality Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Audit Management: Represent and support audit processes based on ISO standards.
  • Communication & Representation: Effectively communicate quality requirements, improvement ideas, and performance data to diverse audiences, including engineering teams, senior management, and executive leadership.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Use sophisticated data analysis techniques to impact quality performance, identify trends, and predict potential issues. Develop and maintain dashboards using tools like Power BI, Tableau to provide clear, actionable insights and regular quality reports to management.
You'll win us over by having the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Five (5) or more years' engineering experience in an electrical equipment manufacturing environment (e.g., switchgear, transformers, power distribution) with a heavy emphasis on design quality, configuration management, or ETO process control.
  • Expertise in implementing and optimizing quality processes using automation.
  • Thorough understanding of the challenges unique to custom, engineered-to-order (ETO) engineering operations and workflow automation.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and mentor multidisciplinary teams without direct authority.
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience with Root Cause Analysis (8D, A3, Ishikawa) and CAPA processes.
  • Proficiency in process risk assessment methodologies (PFMEA, DFMEA)
  • Experience with tools and systems like SAP, Salesforce, and PowerBI.
  • Understanding and experience with ISO standards and auditing processes.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% based on business needs, including travel to other Siemens sites domestically and in Querétaro, Mexico.
