Job description

This is a remote position within the United States that requires travel as outlined below. Candidates may be based anywhere in the U.S.; however, preference will be given to those located in the following cities:
  • Dallas, TX
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Chattanooga, TN
  • St. Louis, MO
  • Kansas City, KS

As a contingent driver for our Animal Relocation team, you will meet animal welfare professionals across the country and fill an important role in creating opportunities for animals. It's hard work that takes a special person, but there is no better feeling than knowing you personally and directly improved outcomes for an animal.
Who We Are
The ASPCA®'s (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Animal Relocation team is responsible for transporting more than 35,000 dogs and cats each year. Using both land and air transportation, the ASPCA partners with "source" shelters in areas with high homeless pet populations and transports animals to "destination" shelters in communities where adoptable animals are in high demand.
What You'll Do
Animal Relocation Drivers, a contracted position hired through a third-party staffing agency, are responsible for driving ASPCA-owned vehicles to relocate animals from source to destination partners. In addition to the crucial task of care and transport of both dogs and cats, this position is responsible for stocking the vehicle, monitoring the inventory in storage, maintaining logs, cleaning trucks and, on occasion, delivering the truck for maintenance.
Temporary Role Details:
  • This is a temporary, contingent position and the person hired will be employed through a third-party staffing agency.
  • The target pay rate for this temporary role is $25 per hour and may be modified in the future.
  • Position requires two weeks per month of availability (minimum) for out-of-state, overnight travel. Weeks do not have to be consecutive (back-to-back), but drivers are typically on the road, away from home, for 5-10 days at a time.

Driving and Travel Requirements:
  • Must be located within an hour of a major airport and have the ability to travel to vehicle pickup locations
  • Significant travel by air and ground required
  • Must have five or more years of driving experience, provide a valid driver's license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.
  • Must be able to drive eight hours in shifts as part of a team
  • Must be comfortable being on the road for up to sixteen hours at a time
  • Willing to travel frequently including some weekends

What's Expected of You - Position Responsibilities & Qualifications:
Animal Management and Transport (50%)
  • Manage onsite loading and unloading of dogs and cats on transport vehicles
  • Examine animals for obvious signs of illness or injury and communicate as described in protocols
  • Triage the animal load and unload
  • Provide care for animals on transport
  • Provide spot cleaning for animals on transport
  • Learn to recognize illness or distress and how to manage minor issues
  • Communicate with ASPCA Veterinarian
  • Communicate with shelter staff and volunteers
  • Liaison with ASPCA Manager
  • Excellent customer service communications are expected

Stocking, Cleaning, Maintenance (20%)
  • Stock vehicles and storage unit with supplies as directed
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect interior of vehicles in cab and animal compartment
  • Assist with minor repairs and maintenance as needed
  • Assist in delivery of supplies to various ASPCA and partner locations in multiple states
  • Provide medical-grade disinfection of vehicles, cages, carriers and equipment in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Stock transport trucks with carriers and supplies to meet inventory needs
  • Communicate vehicle maintenance needs to Manager
  • Maintain organized, clean and disinfected workspace
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Safety (10%)
  • Keep track of high value equipment entrusted to drivers (check out during morning shift & check in during evening shift)
  • Perform daily inspections to exterior of vehicles for damage
  • Park and maneuver vehicles
  • Utilize provided PPE (Personal Protection Equipment)
  • Safely manage animals to maximize personal safety and safety of animals and teammates
  • Understanding OSHA regulations and requirements on the vehicle

Administrative Duties (20%)
  • Responsible for receiving and transferring of dogs and cats and ensuring that the corresponding electronic and hardcopy paperwork is complete and correct
  • Provide accurate and responsible oversight of fleet card and corresponding receipts
  • Make copies, and stock inventory with forms if requested.
  • Complete all necessary forms for vehicle maintenance and repair and any necessary logs
  • Capable of working remotely with professionalism and positive outlook
  • Capable of managing electronic equipment and learning new programs
  • Be comfortable working in Adobe, Excel, and cloud-based document sharing platforms

Qualifications:
  • Deep commitment to saving more shelter pets' lives through critical transport assistance work
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting with minimal supervision
  • Exceptional detail orientation
  • Ability to precisely follow written protocols
  • Experience with cleaning animal housing (preferred, not required)
  • Ability to repeatedly lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to bend, crouch, and kneel
  • Basic computer skills required; familiarity with using an iPad and iPhone preferred
  • Demonstrates care and concern for the well-being of animals
  • Ability to take responsibility for project management
  • Must be able to drive eight hours in shifts as part of a team
  • Must be comfortable being on the road for up to sixteen hours at a time
  • Able to work and drive in inclement weather, including heat, rain, and snow

  • One or more years of professional animal handling required, additional experience preferred
  • Experience driving commercial vehicles a plus but not required
