What is content screening?

Content screening is the process of reviewing and evaluating digital content—such as text, images, and videos—to ensure it meets specific guidelines and policies. This role is crucial for maintaining a safe and appropriate environment on websites, social media platforms, and other online communities. Content screeners identify and filter out harmful, offensive, or inappropriate material, helping to protect users and uphold the platform's standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a content screener, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Content Screener, you need a keen attention to detail, strong reading comprehension, and familiarity with content guidelines or policies, often supported by a bachelor's degree in communications or a related field. Knowledge of content management systems (CMS), moderation tools, and sometimes certifications in digital safety or data privacy are commonly required. Excellent judgment, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for handling sensitive material and collaborating with team members. These skills ensure that all content aligns with community standards, protects users, and upholds the platform's reputation.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in content screening roles, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in content screening often encounter the challenge of reviewing large volumes of diverse and sometimes sensitive material, which can be mentally taxing. Maintaining objectivity while adhering to company policies and community guidelines is essential, even when content is disturbing or ambiguous. To manage these challenges, many organizations provide regular training, clear escalation procedures for complex cases, and access to mental health resources. Additionally, content screeners typically work in teams, allowing them to support each other and share best practices to ensure consistent and fair decision-making.

What is the difference between Content Screening vs Content Moderation?

AspectContent ScreeningContent Moderation
Primary FocusPreliminary review to filter out inappropriate or harmful content before publicationOngoing management and enforcement of content policies after content is published
Work EnvironmentOften involves screening large volumes of content, sometimes automated or semi-automatedIncludes real-time monitoring, user interactions, and community management
Required CredentialsBasic understanding of content policies, attention to detail, sometimes technical skillsStrong communication skills, knowledge of platform policies, conflict resolution abilities

Content Screening involves the initial review process to filter out unsuitable content before it goes live, focusing on quality control. Content Moderation, on the other hand, is an ongoing process of managing and enforcing content policies post-publication, ensuring community standards are maintained. Both roles are essential in maintaining a safe and compliant online environment, but they differ mainly in timing and scope.

Job description

Content Creator
Location: Remote (PST Hours)
Engagement Type: Freelance (Temp Employee W-4) with Potential for Full Time Conversion
Reports To: Creative Director
Rate: $25 - $45/Hour
About Us
UNFOLD is an award-winning digital creative agency based in Los Angeles, partnering with some of the world's most dynamic entertainment and brand clients. We create culturally relevant, digitally driven work that connects audiences and brands across platforms.
The Role
Our Social team is seeking an experienced Content Creator to help lead reactive content creation, social content capture, and trend-based storytelling. With a strong understanding of meme culture, user-generated content, platform-specific formats, and mobile-first production, you will support creative execution and deliver socially relevant work that drives engagement.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience in digital content creation and a strong passion for entertainment and streaming. You are comfortable translating creative direction into platform-native assets, capturing content on your phone, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to move quickly in response to cultural moments.
In this role, you will serve as a key engine for real-time content development. You will ideate social concepts, capture original content, tag and log streaming assets, write social-forward copy, and help keep clients at the center of digital culture.
Here's What You'll Do
Content Ideation & Creation
• Ideate and create reactive content tied to cultural moments and real-time trends.
• Develop social-first assets including memes, stills, edits, hype reels, and clip pulls.
• Watch and analyze client content to tag and log clips for future activations.
Social Content Capture
• Capture original social content on your phone for platform-native use.
• Shoot short-form video and behind-the-scenes content optimized for TikTok, Reels, and Stories.
• Create quick-turn mobile content that feels authentic, timely, and aligned with brand goals.
Copywriting & Platform Execution
• Write platform-native copy and on-screen text aligned to each client's voice.
• Publish and manage content across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X.
• Adapt assets for each platform using strong hooks and scroll-stopping creative.
Trend Spotting & Optimization
• Track emerging memes, behaviors, and platform trends before they peak.
• Use basic design and editing tools to rapidly iterate and refine content.
• Monitor engagement signals to inform future creative decisions and performance.
Here's What It Takes
• 2+ years of experience in digital content creation, social media, or a related field.
• Entertainment, film, TV, or streaming experience strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and platform best practices.
• Experience capturing and shooting content on a mobile phone for social platforms.
• Experience creating short-form content using both self-shot and existing video assets.
• Strong writing skills with the ability to craft engaging copy and on-screen text.
• Basic proficiency in graphic design and video editing tools.
• High cultural awareness, humor, and instinct for timely, shareable content.
• Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
