Job description

Are you a seasoned media attorney ready to make an impact across one of America's leading media companies? The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking aSr. Counsel, Media Transactionsto support our dynamic media, production, distribution, and content businesses. In this role, you'll provide strategic legal guidance on commercial transactions, original production activities, content licensing, distribution matters, and operational issues-all while partnering closely with business leaders to drive results and manage risk.

This is aremote positionoffering the flexibility to work from your home office while collaborating with talented colleagues across the company.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Serve as a generalist media/entertainment attorney supporting matters involving distribution, programming, production, licensing, advertising, marketing, operations, and corporate initiatives.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on commercial agreements, including content licensing, production, services, vendor, nondisclosure, release, and other media-related contracts.
  • Support original production and content-rights work, including development, production, clearance, rights, releases, production services, location matters, risk management, acquisition, use, distribution, renewal, sublicensing, exclusivity, windowing, territory, term, and rights-clearance issues.
  • Support distribution-related legal work, including carriage, affiliation, retransmission, platform, and digital distribution arrangements, as needed.
  • Oversee and manage litigation and disputes, including outside counsel strategy, budgets, pleadings and correspondence, discovery, settlement evaluation, pre-litigation disputes, demand letters, claims, subpoenas, investigations, and stakeholder communications.
  • Provide practical advice on negotiation strategy, risk mitigation, contract interpretation, compliance obligations, operational questions, and dispute avoidance; maintain templates, playbooks, approval processes, and best practices; support responsible AI and technology-enabled legal department improvements; monitor relevant legal and industry developments; and support special projects as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in good standing with at least one state bar; OH, NY, or GA preferred
  • Generally, 10+ years experience working in a media and/or television environment with content exploited through linear and non-linear means, including broadcast, cable, streaming, and digital platforms preferred
  • Significant experience practicing law in a law firm, corporate legal department, media company, entertainment company, or comparable business environment, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating media/entertainment-focused agreements preferred
