Job description

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a full-time Web Content Specialist (WordPress) to transition, manage and develop WordPress-based web content with a focus on Earth science and remote sensing topics. This role requires a unique blend of technical WordPress expertise, content management skills, and the ability to translate complex scientific information for diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical WordPress Management:
    • Develop, maintain, and optimize WordPress websites and pages.
    • Customize themes and plugins to meet project requirements.
    • Ensure website performance, security, and accessibility standards.
    • Troubleshoot technical issues and implement solutions.
    • Manage website updates, backups, and migrations
  • Content Development & Editing:
    • Consolidate already existing websites through migrating the contents.
    • Collaborate with program managers, scientists and subject matter experts to gather and refine content.
    • Edit and format technical content for clarity, accuracy, and web readability.
    • Ensure content adheres to style guides and organizational standards.
    • Optimize content for SEO and user engagement.
    • Manage content calendars and publication workflows.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Work closely with content providers to understand project goals and requirements.
    • Translate scientific concepts into accessible web content.
    • Coordinate with team members to ensure timely content delivery.
    • Provide guidance to content contributors on web best practice

Required Qualifications

  • BS/BA or comparable work experience.
  • 2+ years of proven experience with WordPress development and administration.
  • Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and basic web technologies.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards (Section 508/WCAG).
  • Image editing and optimization SEO best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with content editing and publication workflows.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot custom code, module conflicts, and cross-platform compatibility issues.
  • Experience with responsive web design, accessibility, and performance optimization.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.

Desired Qualifications

  • BS in Earth Science, Geography, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Advanced programming experience including Drupal CMS:
    • Modules, hooks, custom PHP development, theme system.
    • PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/jQuery, and familiarity with modern JS frameworks (React, Vue) for custom functionality.
    • Geospatial database migration and data integrity validation for files that include vector (SHP, GeoJson), raster files (JPG, PNG, etc.) and associated SQL databases.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing, satellite imagery, or geospatial technologies.
  • Experience working with scientific or technical content.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and technique.
