Department: Enclosure Design & Consulting

Job Summary:

Lerch Bates is seeking an Associate Consultant – Enclosure Design & Consulting to join our Repair & Modernization team. This role is responsible for identifying, planning, directing, and overseeing multiple building enclosure projects under the guidance of a Senior Consultant.

The Associate Consultant serves as a technical liaison to clients and project teams, providing solutions, recommendations, and peer review support across a range of building enclosure consulting and commissioning (BECx) services.

This position is designed for professionals looking to develop into a fully independent Consultant role. The Associate Consultant will build technical depth, project leadership capability, and client management experience while contributing to complex, fast-paced projects. The role also includes mentoring and technical support of junior staff as knowledge develops.

What You’ll Do:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.

Project Delivery & Technical Development

  • Acting as a direct client liaison and technical lead on building enclosure consulting and commissioning (BECx) projects for new construction and major renovations
  • Performing technical peer reviews of architectural drawings with a focus on water, thermal, air, and vapor control systems
  • Reviewing and evaluating systems including curtain walls, storefronts, exterior wall assemblies, window integration, and related enclosure components
  • Participating in design review meetings to present findings and recommendations
  • Learning industry best practices through collaboration with Senior Consultants Consultants, Directors, and external partners

Project & Field Responsibilities

  • Participate in design, pre-construction, and construction phase meetings, providing technical insight and recommendations
  • Lead or support pre-construction meetings focused on enclosure performance risks and coordination
  • Conduct quality assurance site visits and serve as the on-site representative for Lerch Bates clients
  • Perform or support building envelope field testing (e.g., ASTM E783, ASTM E1105, AAMA 501.2, ASTM E779)
  • Maintain a strong understanding of enclosure installation sequencing and how it impacts schedule and performance outcomes
  • Manage active projects with oversight to ensure quality deliverables, responsiveness, budget control, and client satisfaction

Client Communication & Relationship Management

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients and maintain strong, ongoing relationships
  • Communicate proactively with clients and stakeholders regarding project status, risks, and changes
  • Identify opportunities to expand services within existing client relationships
  • Participate in continuous communication with project teams to support coordination and execution

Project Tracking & Execution

  • Support project tracking, including status reporting and variance analysis (planned vs. actual)
  • Participate in internal and client project review meetings
  • Follow established processes for change management and project documentation
  • Manage time, budgets, and resources using departmental tools
  • Support achievement of utilization and project delivery targets

 What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Construction, Architecture, or related engineering discipline
  • 3–4 years of experience in the architecture, engineering, or construction industry
  • Working knowledge of building enclosure systems, including: roofing, exterior cladding, waterproofing (horizontal and vertical), glazing systems, sealants, and weather barriers
  • Understanding of enclosure installation sequencing and its impact on project schedule and performance
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform detailed analysis with high accuracy and attention to detail
  • Deductive reasoning and strong critical thinking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing in a team environment
  • Commitment to quality, consistency, and precision in deliverables
  • Strong client communication and responsiveness
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam
  • AutoCAD and Revit experience preferred

Working Environment:

This role involves both physical and mental demands and may be performed in various settings, including offices, construction sites, and confined spaces like elevator pits. Physical Demands:

This role requires regular sitting, talking, and hearing in meetings and by phone. Employees must navigate tight spaces, climb ladders, move around construction sites, take measurements, and travel by car, air, or rail. Duties may involve working at heights and in confined spaces, using hands for tasks like typing and operating elevator components, and applying up to 30 lbs. of force. Close visual attention is also required.

Mental Demands:

Regular interaction with executives, colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders is also expected.
