Job description

ENERGY SYSTEMS GROUP is looking for a Director, Construction to join our Public Sector Southwest team. This position can be remote. The ESG Southwest region has offices in Rockwall, TX, Albuquerque, NM and Littleton, CO and proximity to those offices is preferred. This position should expect to travel approximately 50% including overnight stays.

The Construction Director is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing all phases of construction operations, from project development and preconstruction through project execution, closeout, and warranty. This role drives operational excellence, financial performance, safety, quality, and risk management while establishing and enforcing company-wide construction best practices. The Construction Director partners closely with business development, project teams, customers, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure successful project delivery, profitability, and client satisfaction. In addition, this position provides leadership and mentorship to construction personnel, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional growth.

The essential functions of the position include:

  • Lead construction operations across all project phases, from preconstruction and project planning through closeout and warranty.
  • Drive the execution of company strategy, operational objectives, and financial performance goals.
  • Establish, implement, and enforce company-wide construction standards, best practices, and quality control programs.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to Project Managers, Superintendents, and project teams, fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Partner with business development and project development teams to support project pursuits, budgeting, scope development, and client presentations.
  • Oversee project budgets, forecasting, cost-to-complete reporting, billings, and profitability across the construction portfolio.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, design professionals, and key industry partners.
  • Lead contract negotiations and support the management of contractual agreements with owners, consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with company quality standards.
  • Drive risk management efforts through proactive planning, issue resolution, and participation in company-wide risk mitigation initiatives.
  • Review project schedules, construction methods, procurement strategies, and resource allocation to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, safety regulations, environmental requirements, and company policies.
  • Lead resolution of complex project challenges, escalated client concerns, and construction-related issues.
  • Monitor project performance through regular site visits, progress reviews, and collaboration with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Champion a culture of safety, continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence throughout the organization.

Your background includes:

  • BA/BS degree in Construction, Engineering, or equivalent field of study
  • 10+ years of industry experience
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of performance contracting, design-build construction, and delivery of projects to the MUSH market
  • Exemplary project management skills
  • Proven track record of success and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and mentor junior staff
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Current working knowledge of the industry and the willingness to maintain and grow your knowledge
