What is a configuration management analyst?

A Configuration Management Analyst is a professional responsible for overseeing and maintaining the integrity and consistency of a project's or organization's configuration items, such as hardware, software, documentation, and processes. They develop and implement configuration management policies, procedures, and tools to ensure that all changes are tracked, documented, and authorized. Their work helps prevent unauthorized modifications, reduces errors, and ensures compliance with industry standards. Configuration Management Analysts often work closely with IT, engineering, and project management teams.

What are some common challenges faced by configuration management analysts, and how can they be addressed?

Configuration Management Analysts often encounter challenges such as maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation, ensuring compliance with established processes, and managing changes across multiple teams or systems. These challenges can be addressed by implementing robust version control tools, fostering clear communication between departments, and conducting regular audits of configuration items. Additionally, staying proactive in identifying potential discrepancies and providing training for team members on configuration management best practices can help ensure smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a configuration management analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Management Analyst, you need a solid understanding of configuration management principles, ITIL or similar frameworks, and typically a bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for maintaining accurate records and collaborating across teams. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring system integrity, minimizing risks, and supporting efficient IT operations.

As part of our team, you'll contribute to the operations, sustainment, and defense of the Defense Information System Network (DISN) within the DOD Information Network (DODIN), supporting the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). As our team helps lead DISA's transition from legacy tools to the ServiceNow platform, you will directly support network operations and engineering functions, contributing to the reliability and security of critical communication infrastructure.
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Monitor the progress of approved changes to ensure they are implemented correctly.
  • Independently conduct periodic audits of CIs to verify they conform to the established baseline and standards.
  • Identify, document, and report discrepancies between the auto-discovered configurations and documented configurations.
  • Prepare and present audit reports to management, highlighting key findings and corrective recommendations.
  • Contribute with development and maintenance of ServiceNow dashboards representing baseline CIs across DISN.
  • Assist with process documents to ensure documentation stays current and reflects best practices.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of CM processes and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An active, in-scope US Government issued Secret clearance before the start date.
  • Requires 1-3 years of direct experience in Configuration Management or a related IT field.
  • Basic understanding of IT Service Management (ITSM) principles and prior experience using an ITSM tool, with ServiceNow experience being a significant plus.
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail, and proven problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Must be able to commute to Scott AFB, IL for full-time onsite support.

Desired Qualifications:

  • ITIL Foundation Certification.
  • Interest in developing skills related to ServiceNow reporting and dashboards.

Education:
  • A Bachelor's degree is preferred, but equivalent professional experience will be strongly considered.
