The Burbidge Athletics Academic Center provides industry-leading academic support services for over 500 student-athletes participating at the NCAA Division I level and within the Big 12 Conference. The academic services team provides an environment where each student-athlete has the means to reach their academic potential through integrated and immersive learning opportunities. This position is an opportunity to work collaboratively with a team of industry professionals, student-athletes, coaches, athletics administrators, and campus partners to ensure our student-athletes graduate and receive their degree from the University of Utah.
The Athletics Academic Services intern will work closely with an assigned athletics academic advisor and the learning specialist team to provide academic services to an assigned caseload of student-athletes. This internship is unique in that it provides a combination of athletics, academic advising, and learning specialist experiences to develop a more well-rounded academic services support professional. Interns will become well-versed in academic advising, learning support strategies, disability services, and NCAA progress toward degree rules/eligibility, while developing the necessary administrative skills to grow within the industry.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with athletics academic advisors and learning specialists to develop and implement individualized academic support plans.
  • Assist in the oversight of evening study hall activities in the Burbidge Athletics Academic Center.
  • Develop the ability to identify academic concerns through formal and informal assessments.
  • Monitor and report the academic progress of student-athletes while fostering academic accountability.
  • Educate student-athletes to effectively communicate with professional etiquette in a university setting.
  • Assist student-athletes in the development of short-term/long-term achievable academic goals.
  • Develop a strong comprehension and understanding of NCAA continuing eligibility and progress towards degree rules and regulations in order to assist student-athletes in developing academic schedules to meet progress towards degree/graduation requirements.
  • Develop a working knowledge of university degree requirements to assist student-athletes in maintaining college degree requirements while selecting classes for enrollment.
  • Work closely with at-risk student-athletes to develop independent, lifelong learners.
  • Prepare daily/weekly academic updates to track the progress of assigned student-athletes while sharing with the academic services team and coaches.
  • Work with the Athletics Psychology & Wellness Team and the Center for Disability Services to assist in the implementation of academic accommodations.
  • Understand and adhere to the rules and regulations specific to FERPA.
  • Participate in a variety of professional training sessions and activities.
  • Perform general administrative tasks and various projects as requested.
  • Maintain an active schedule of weekly meetings with assigned caseload of student-athletes.
  • Develop a strong understanding of all things related to the mitigation of academic misconduct applicable to the athletics department, the University of Utah, the Big 12 Conference, and the NCAA.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree Required.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Personable and highly organized.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desire to obtain full-time professional employment in the Athletics Academic Services Industry as either an Athletics Academic Advisor or Learning Specialist.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Preferences
  • Experience working with student-athletes at the Division I level.
  • Ability to understand the needs of academically at-risk student-athletes.
  • Graduate Assistantship experience in the Athletics Academic Services Industry.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and NCAA rules and regulations.
