Job description

The Ready Mix Batch Plant Operator is a professional responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a concrete batching plant. Successful execution ensures the production of high-quality ready-mix concrete by managing equipment, monitoring material proportions, and coordinating with delivery drivers and customers. The duties include operating machinery, maintaining plant safety, conducting routine inspections, and troubleshooting mechanical issues. This role requires attention to detail, technical knowledge, and compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Essential Roles, Responsibilities and Duties
The basic responsibilities of the Batch Plant Operator includes, but is not limited to the following:
Scheduling & Dispatching
  • Record complete and detailed customer orders and additional information
  • Dispatch and ship ready mix concrete in a timely and efficient manner, work with customers to adjust truck demand to meet suitable delivery rate
  • Communicate with drivers and direct them to delivery locations, correlate with drivers on all aspects of delivery and product to provide better quality and service
  • Develop customer relationships and sales opportunities, recognize and fulfill customer needs to the best of your and McCody's ability within best business and ethical practices
  • Work with customers in a positive, professional manner when there are technical or unplanned problems or conflicting delivery times, establish satisfactory reschedule times, and contact contractors who have future ready mix pour schedules and have failed to call in to confirm
  • Answer phone calls, texts, and emails; return communications in a timely manner (max end of same day)
  • Schedule drivers daily, coordinate and schedule independent truck owners, coordinate loader operator schedule with aggregate dispatch order and ready mix order schedule
  • Understand the appropriate uses of various mix designs

Batching
  • Opening, start-up, and closing procedures
  • Efficiently operate computer controlled batching system that transfers product from storage bins through weigh bins and into ready-mix trucks while maintain maximum production levels
  • Responsible for reading and interpreting computer orders to control design and set appropriate slump
  • Inventory tracking and ordering of cement powder, flyash, admixtures, fibermesh, etc. (ready mix materials)
  • Coordinate with other divisions to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of operations

Quality Control
  • Ensure that all services performed and products meet high quality standards
  • Log weather details and properties of concrete daily or as needed throughout the day as changes occur
  • Ensure the efficient working condition of the plant by communicating repair or maintenance issues and urgency to Yard Manager or Mechanic shop, assist others in facility and plant maintenance and safety tasks during slow or idle periods
  • Immediately inform direct supervisor of any problems with projects, direct all high performance concrete questions to supervisor
  • Communicate with Customer Relations Representative to reinforce customer relationships and relay feedback
  • Research market trends and demands for innovative and proven techniques, products, and technological advancements
  • Research and submit new product or service ideas to upper management for consideration, gain approval for requisition of samples, perform sample testing

Invoicing
  • Prepare and issue accurate sales orders and invoices
  • Understand and properly calculate and apply sales tax rules, codes, and exemptions
  • Maintain proper documentation to support billing (signed tickets, approvals, etc.)
  • Monitor customer accounts for status and outstanding payments
  • Receive and record customer payments via multiple methods and provide receipts

Reporting & Recordkeeping
  • End of day/period ticket maintenance and batching
  • Generate and analyze reports and graphs
  • Prepare, provide detailed notes, review, keep record of, and submit for processing documentation daily (coding item receipts and bills, equipment inspection and repair reports, time sheets, IFTA logs, etc.)

Other
  • Occasionally drive ready mix or dump truck as needed if in possession of a class A or B CDL
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report conditions that are not correctable to owner and safety coordinator immediately
  • Perform all job duties in accordance with OSHA and company policies
  • Operate heavy equipment as needed
  • Establish good relations with employees involved in production and delivery

  • 18+ years of age
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds

  • Valid class D drivers license with a 3-year clean driving record for insurance purposes

  • Extensive knowledge of the surrounding area, travel time to job locations, the ready mix delivery process, and company products
  • Extensive knowledge of common and possible jobsite conditions, types of forming and concrete placement procedures
  • Sufficient knowledge of concrete properties and performance under specific and adverse weather and climate conditions
  • Sufficient knowledge of mix design and admixture properties and performance characteristics
  • Ability to take initiative to increase the quality of one's skills to become more efficient
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards

Perk Qualifications (not required)
  • Command Alkon software experience
  • Class A or B Commercial Drivers License
  • Heavy equipment operating experience
  • Bilingual - Spanish

Experience/Skills
  • Read, write, and speak English
  • Read and understand maps and road restrictions
  • Apply proficient computer skills for entering orders, calculating volumes, routine software and hardware maintenance, and ticket processing
  • Type 30+ words per minute
  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, user instructions, procedure, operating and maintenance manuals, and engineering specifications
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute ratio, and percent and to interpret bar and line graphs
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in daily productions
  • Articulately communicate efficiently, tactfully and professionally with customers and company personnel at all times
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize while meeting customer needs
  • Action-oriented and capable of balancing multiple activities and priorities with minimal supervision
  • Make sound judgement calls under pressure
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve issues safely and efficiently
