Job description

Are you an innovative leader that wants to architect the next generation of automated fulfillment solutions before they become reality? Do you want high-level ownership in solving complex, ambiguous problems at the earliest stages of concept development? Does the challenge of designing advanced system integrations that leverage breakthrough technologies, robotics, and material handling equipment appeal to you? If so, we have the job for you!
We're looking to add a high-impact Innovation & Design Engineer to our Advanced Concept Team. In this role, you will drive early-stage concept design and system modeling for next-generation fulfillment architectures. You will own advanced concept projects from initial modeling through design approval, creating the blueprints that guide future network implementation. You will develop functional requirements and collaborate with product development teams, ensuring automation technologies meet holistic fulfillment needs.
Your projects will focus on advanced concept integration across multiple automation technologies, creating solutions that span hardware, software, and operational requirements. You will work on concepts that may become templates for new construction or retrofit strategies across Amazon's global fulfillment network.
You will collaborate with a team of highly skilled engineers in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment where business problems are often undefined. Our team operates horizontally across WWDE's business verticals, with regular senior leadership engagement. You will be challenged to think strategically; you will learn cutting-edge automation technologies; you will work on high-impact, high-visibility concepts that shape Amazon's fulfillment strategy; you will grow as a technical leader through mentoring and cross-functional collaboration.
Key job responsibilities
• Own end-to-end concept design including physical layout, system modeling, and ergonomic assessment for next-generation automated fulfillment solutions
• Design advanced concept integration for ASRS, robotics, and material handling equipment in early-stage development phases
• Create visual prototypes and design artifacts that communicate complex automation concepts to cross-functional stakeholders and leadership
• Develop cost-effective solutions leveraging automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and robotics for future network implementation
• Create technical documentation including functional requirements which guide product development for downstream implementation teams
• Author technical white papers that convey highly complex designs and trade-offs to senior leadership audiences
• Iterate on early-stage concept designs through simulation and modeling to optimize space utilization, throughput, and operational efficiency
A day in the life
You start your morning reviewing CAD layouts for a next-generation ASRS concept, refining integration points based on simulation results. Mid-morning, you present visual prototypes of your robotic cell design to the product team, translating complex automation concepts into clear functional requirements. After lunch, you mentor an junior engineer on their first advanced concept design, helping them think through system-level trade-offs and ergonomic considerations. You close the day iterating on layout optimizations for your second active project, a regional distribution center retrofit concept, preparing technical documentation that will guide the implementation team's development phase.
