What does a computer vision engineer intern do?

A Computer Vision Engineer Intern assists in developing and implementing algorithms that enable computers to process and interpret visual information from the world, such as images or videos. They often work on projects involving object detection, image segmentation, and other tasks related to image analysis and machine learning. Interns usually collaborate with experienced engineers, contribute to codebases, and help test and optimize models for various applications. Their work supports industries like robotics, healthcare, automotive, and more.

What types of projects and tasks can a computer vision engineer intern typically expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Vision Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as developing image recognition algorithms, annotating datasets, and testing computer vision models for accuracy and performance. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and data scientists, contributing to tasks like data preprocessing, model training, and performance benchmarking. This role offers a great opportunity to gain practical experience with popular frameworks such as OpenCV and TensorFlow, and to develop skills in both research and applied development within interdisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer vision engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Vision Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in computer science, mathematics, and image processing, typically supported by coursework or experience in machine learning and programming (Python, C++). Familiarity with frameworks like OpenCV, TensorFlow, or PyTorch, and experience using annotation tools or version control systems is highly valuable. Job description

Job Summary:
Toggle Robotics is a venture-backed robotics and software company focused on building technology for the construction and fabrication industries. They are seeking a 3D Computer Vision Engineer to develop software that transforms raw 3D scan data into reliable measurements and decisions for quality control in fabrication environments.
Responsibilities:
• Develop pipelines for:
• Point cloud processing, filtering, and denoising
• Scan-to-CAD alignment (ICP + feature-based methods)
• Feature extraction and primitive fitting (planes, edges, holes, slots, chamfers, fillets)
• Dimensional measurement, tolerance evaluation, and per-point deviation field computation
• Translate raw geometry into clear inspection outputs (pass/fail, deviations, annotations)
• Generate per-point deviation heatmaps for visual review in the 3D viewer
• Handle calibration, drift, noise, and incomplete data
• Ensure robustness across materials, lighting, and shop-floor conditions
• Work directly with QC managers on the shop floor to validate and iterate
• Ship working software on a short feedback loop — prototype, test in the field, harden
• Support live customer deployments
• Help define how UI/UX is optimized for operators
• Contribute to end-to-end workflows, not just isolated algorithms
Qualifications:
Required:
• Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or related field
• Strong experience in 3D computer vision / geometry processing
• Proficiency in Python; C++ a strong plus
• Experience shipping production-quality computer vision or measurement pipelines (not just research code)
• Hands-on experience with real sensor data (not just simulated or academic datasets)
• Hands-on experience with point cloud libraries (PCL, Open3D, or similar)
• Hands-on experience with registration (ICP, feature-based alignment)
• Hands-on experience with geometric primitive fitting (RANSAC, circle/cylinder/plane fitting)
• Hands-on experience with sensor calibration and depth systems
Preferred:
• Inspection, metrology, or manufacturing systems experience
• Parsing CAD models (DXF, STEP) and aligning scan data to CAD geometry
• Deployment of systems into production environments
• Robotics or industrial automation background
Company:
Toggle Robotics is building the future of cities and infrastructure by creating safer, faster and smarter construction technology. Founded in 2016, the company is headquartered in Bohemia, USA, with a team of 11-50 employees. The company is currently Early Stage.
