Computer Vision Engineer Intern information

What does a computer vision engineer intern do?

A Computer Vision Engineer Intern assists in developing and implementing algorithms that enable computers to process and interpret visual information from the world, such as images or videos. They often work on projects involving object detection, image segmentation, and other tasks related to image analysis and machine learning. Interns usually collaborate with experienced engineers, contribute to codebases, and help test and optimize models for various applications. Their work supports industries like robotics, healthcare, automotive, and more.

What types of projects and tasks can a computer vision engineer intern typically expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Vision Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as developing image recognition algorithms, annotating datasets, and testing computer vision models for accuracy and performance. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and data scientists, contributing to tasks like data preprocessing, model training, and performance benchmarking. This role offers a great opportunity to gain practical experience with popular frameworks such as OpenCV and TensorFlow, and to develop skills in both research and applied development within interdisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer vision engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Vision Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in computer science, mathematics, and image processing, typically supported by coursework or experience in machine learning and programming (Python, C++). Familiarity with frameworks like OpenCV, TensorFlow, or PyTorch, and experience using annotation tools or version control systems is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and the ability to collaborate effectively help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing, testing, and optimizing computer vision models in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Job description

At OpenSpace, we're redefining how the world's most complex projects are built. Our AI-powered Visual Intelligence Platform uses computer vision and spatial AI to give construction teams a real-time view of what's happening on-site, helping them build faster, safer, and with greater confidence.

But what truly sets us apart is our people. We hire curious, driven teammates who love solving hard problems, taking ownership, and making a real-world impact. Great people build great culture—and apparently it shows. Forbes has named OpenSpace one of America's Best Startup Employers five years in a row. Come see what all the fuss is about.✨

Brief summary of role:

We're looking for an experienced Sr. Computer Vision Engineer to own core algorithms for mapping, localization, image analysis, and 3D reconstruction on real-world construction site data. This role centers on advanced computer vision but integrates modern machine learning methodologies to optimize performance on real-world construction site data. You will leverage classical CV, deep learning (transformers, multi-modal models), and probabilistic modeling to provide meaningful insights to our customers.

What you'll be doing:

  • Design and architect complex, multi-component computer vision and machine learning systems.
  • Develop and optimize image localization, SLAM, SfM, and 3D reconstruction techniques.
  • Implement deep learning models for visual perception, leveraging modern techniques (LLMs, VLLMs, transformers, and generative AI).
  • Prototype and rigorously test algorithms on real-world construction site data.
  • Collaborate with platform engineers to transition research prototypes into production-ready implementations.
  • Oversee dataset creation, curation, and annotation to ensure high-quality training and validation data.
  • Monitor system performance in production, ensuring scalability and robustness.

What we are looking for:

  • M.S./Ph.D. in related field or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5+ years of industry experience developing computer vision and machine learning models for image processing.
  • Strong expertise in camera models, calibration, and 3D pose representations/transforms.
  • Experience with SLAM, SfM, 3D reconstruction, photogrammetry, or VIO.
  • Proficiency in deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
  • Experience working with multi-modal models combining images and language.
  • Deep understanding of fundamental CV: feature detection/matching, probabilistic modeling, computational geometry, and numerical optimization.
  • Experience with 3D visualizations and debug interfaces (OpenGL/PyQt).

Why join us:

  • Be part of a high-growth company shaping the future of ConTech
  • Work alongside a talented and collaborative team
  • Competitive compensation package, including base salary, commission, and benefits
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth

Base Salary: $168,000 - $220,000 CAD
