What is a machine vision engineer?

A Machine Vision Engineer designs, develops, and implements computer vision systems that enable machines to analyze and interpret visual data. They work with imaging hardware, software, and algorithms to automate inspection, quality control, and object recognition tasks in industries like manufacturing, robotics, and healthcare. Their role involves optimizing image processing techniques, integrating vision systems with automation, and improving performance using AI and machine learning.

What does a machine vision engineer do?

Machine Vision Engineers are often involved in designing, implementing, and optimizing vision systems used for automated inspection, quality control, or object identification in manufacturing environments. On a day-to-day basis, you might work on algorithm development, integrating hardware components like cameras and lighting, troubleshooting vision setups, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams such as mechanical engineers or production managers. Regular tasks include testing new solutions on production lines, refining vision algorithms for accuracy, and documenting system performance. Being adaptable and able to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues is important for success in this dynamic and fast-evolving field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine vision engineer?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, image processing, programming (often Python or C++), and a degree in engineering or computer science. Experience with machine vision libraries (such as OpenCV or HALCON), familiarity with industrial cameras and lighting, and certifications in automation or robotics are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for developing, testing, and deploying reliable vision systems that meet industrial automation needs.

Job description

Catalyx is seeking a Machine Vision Engineer to join our team in Belgium.

Catalyx is a leader in industrial automation solutions, delivering innovative and efficient systems tailored to our clients' needs. We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Vision Engineer to join our team, where you will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and implementation of advanced machine vision systems.

As a Machine Vision Systems Engineer, you will be at the front end of the design, development, and deployment of custom machine vision systems within industrial automation projects. You will be responsible for ensuring these systems meet all technical specifications, adhere to industry standards, and satisfy customer requirements. This role requires close collaboration with engineering teams, vendors, and customers to deliver highโ€‘quality, productionโ€‘ready solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Work with customers and sales leadership to define the scope of machine vision projects.
  • Design the optical configurations for meeting inspection requirements within the constraints of the target environment.
  • Perform sample testing and POCs to verify designs.
  • Take ownership of the design and development of machine vision systems for custom industrial automation projects.
  • Conceptualize, design, and confirm technical specifications and bills of material for machine vision systems.
  • Provide oversight for equipment assessment, ordering, and verification, ensuring that final hardware and software meet customer needs.
  • Ensure that designs align with Catalyx and industry standards and meet all specified requirements.
  • Oversee and support the development, testing, and installation phases, ensuring systems are productionโ€‘ready and meet design specifications.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for machine vision system design, providing guidance in risk evaluation and technical matters.
  • Act as the escalation point for machine visionโ€‘related issues during the build, installation, and warranty phases.
  • Be part of our SLA support team, working in a rotating weekly schedule to assist our customers.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on procurement, training, and upskilling, and assist in sales technical meetings as needed.
  • Meet with vendors to confirm component selection and stay informed on new technologies in machine vision and control systems.
  • Analyze existing procedures, suggest improvements, and support the creation of design and technical documentation.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution (vision component preferred)
  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours or varying work patterns depending on project needs.
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally.
Required Skills
  • Experience with frontโ€‘end GUI development using Cognex Designer and data management, preferably in SQL.
  • Experience in designing and developing machine vision systems within industrial automation and robot guidance experience is a plus.
  • Experience with existing Machine Vision Platforms such as Cognex, Keyence, Halcon, OpenCV or Tensorflow (Cognex platform preferred)
  • Experience implementing projects in a regulated/validated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of objectโ€‘oriented programming languages and machine vision technologies (C#, C++ or Python preferred)
  • Experience with AI Neural Networks, 3D Imaging and Metrology Inspections (Cognex ViDi Deep Learning preferred)
  • Advanced understanding and knowledge of computer vision solutions and principles including image acquisition, optics, lighting, algorithm development, object detection, segmentation, and recognition, AI neural networks, 3D imaging, and metrology inspections.
  • Fluent in English, Dutch and/or French. Ideally have a knowledge of German.
