What Does a Computer Science Professor Do?
A computer science professor teaches at a technical college or university. You create and teach courses in computer science (CS) or related programming or technology subjects. In this career, you prepare the syllabus for each class, deliver lectures and instructions, and use exams and quizzes to assess the performance of students. In many computer science classes, your responsibilities include allowing students to practice the subject matter in a computer lab. You facilitate this practice and offer guidance during lab sessions. In addition to your teaching duties, you sometimes give academic or career advice to students in CS degree programs.

What is the difference between Computer Science Professor vs Software Developer?
| Aspect | Computer Science Professor | Software Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field | Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or related field; certifications optional |
| Work Environment | Academic institutions, research labs, universities | Corporate offices, tech companies, startups |
| Industry Usage | Research, teaching, academic publishing | Software development, product creation, coding |

Successful candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm for learning to teach and conduct scholarship in an interdisciplinary, liberal arts context, and a commitment to building a diverse community. The department uses innovative, student-centered pedagogies, especially active and engaged learning techniques in a setting which places high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups in computing. Colleagues excited about teaching at all levels of undergraduate courses will have the flexibility and support needed to teach established courses and to build new, interesting courses in their area of specialization utilizing highly flexible spaces in our brand-new Computing, Media, and IT (CMIT) building. As instructors, advisors, and work supervisors, our connections with students have created a strong network of alumni that remain connected to the department and help to mentor our students professionally.
All specialty areas are welcome, especially in areas of strong student interest including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and computer science education. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, a teaching philosophy, graduate transcripts, and contact information for three references.
