JOB SUMMARY:
Kentucky State University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics. The successful candidate will provide high-quality instruction in undergraduate mathematics courses, advise students, participate in curriculum development and assessment, contribute to departmental and university service, and support student success through effective teaching and mentoring.
This position is primarily instructional in nature. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their discipline through ongoing professional development and scholarly or professional engagement that enhances teaching effectiveness. While scholarly activity is encouraged, sustained research productivity is not a condition of continued employment.
Regular, in-person participation is an essential function of this position. Faculty members are expected to maintain an on-campus presence to fulfill instructional responsibilities, conduct office hours, advise students, participate in meetings and committee work, collaborate with colleagues, and engage in other activities that support the academic mission of the University.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Teach undergraduate mathematics courses in assigned instructional modalities while maintaining high academic standards and promoting student success.
- Prepare and deliver course instruction consistent with approved curriculum, course learning outcomes, and University academic policies.
- Develop and maintain course syllabi, instructional materials, examinations, assignments, and other learning resources.
- Evaluate student performance in a fair and timely manner and submit grades in accordance with University deadlines.
- Maintain regular and substantive interaction with students through classroom instruction, scheduled office hours, academic advising, and other approved communication methods.
- Provide academic advising and mentoring to students regarding degree requirements, academic progress, and career preparation.
- Participate in curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation activities, and continuous improvement initiatives within the School.
- Collaborate with faculty members to review curriculum, assess student learning outcomes, and support academic program effectiveness.
- Serve on departmental, college, and University committees as assigned.
- Participate in student recruitment, orientation, retention, commencement, and other University events.
- Maintain appropriate instructional records and documentation in accordance with University policies and accreditation standards.
- Utilize instructional technology and the University's learning management system to enhance teaching and student engagement.
- Remain current in the mathematics discipline through professional development activities, professional organizations, workshops, conferences, or other discipline-related activities.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable University policies and procedures.
- Maintain regular, predictable, and reliable on-campus attendance as an essential function of the position.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chairperson, Dean, or other appropriate University administrators.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated knowledge of undergraduate mathematics, including algebra, calculus, statistics, discrete mathematics, or other assigned instructional areas.
- Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and student-centered teaching practices in higher education.
- Knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes.
- Knowledge of learning management systems and instructional technologies.
- Ability to communicate complex mathematical concepts effectively through written and oral instruction.
- Ability to develop engaging classroom instruction and meaningful student learning experiences.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility for regular University employees.
The faculty member may supervise undergraduate student research, independent studies, internships, teaching assistants, or student employees as assigned.
The faculty member may provide academic leadership through curriculum development, committee service, assessment activities, and mentoring responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Mathematics or a closely related discipline from a regionally accredited institution by the date of appointment.
- Minimum of eighteen graduate semester hours in Mathematics consistent with SACSCOC faculty credentialing requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate mathematics courses effectively.
- Strong commitment to student learning, academic advising, and instructional excellence.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Commitment to maintaining professional standards and contributing to the mission of Kentucky State University.
Preferred
- Previous teaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Experience teaching multiple undergraduate mathematics courses.
- Experience using learning management systems and instructional technologies.
- Experience with curriculum development, assessment, or accreditation activities.
- Experience advising undergraduate students.
- Professional engagement through presentations, publications, professional organizations, or continuing education related to the discipline.
FACULTY CREDENTIALING:
- Candidates must meet the faculty credentialing requirements established by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and Kentucky State University.
- An earned doctorate in Mathematics or a closely related discipline from a regionally accredited institution is required.
- Official transcripts must demonstrate at least eighteen graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline consistent with SACSCOC Standard 6.2.a regarding faculty qualifications.
- Faculty members are expected to maintain appropriate academic credentials and participate in continuing professional development to support instructional effectiveness and academic quality.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed primarily in classrooms, offices, laboratories, and other University facilities.
- The position requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, speaking, and using a computer.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to twenty pounds may be required.
- Periodic evening or weekend work may be necessary to support instructional, recruitment, or University activities.
- Limited travel, including overnight travel, may occasionally be required for professional development, conferences, recruitment, or other University business.
- Regular, reliable, and predictable in-person attendance on the Kentucky State University campus is an essential function of this position. The faculty member must be available to teach assigned courses, maintain office hours, advise students, participate in committee meetings, collaborate with colleagues, attend faculty meetings, and engage in other University activities during scheduled work periods. This position is not eligible for routine remote work except as specifically authorized by the University.
