Job description

Company Overview
Bennett Marine is a global leader in innovative product development and manufacturing within the marine industry. Founded in 1960, Bennett pioneered the trim tab-an industry-defining innovation that improves boat handling, stability, and fuel efficiency.
In 2017, Bennett Marine became part of the Yamaha family, joining Yamaha Marine Systems Company (YMSC). As part of Yamaha, Bennett plays a key role in delivering integrated marine solutions that reduce complexity and enhance the overall boating experience-supporting Yamaha's vision of creating a lifetime of exciting and memorable experiences.
With deep manufacturing roots, modern engineering practices, and access to the global Yamaha network, Bennett Marine offers an exceptional environment for engineers who want to apply theory to real-world manufacturing challenges.
Summer Manufacturing Engineering Internship
Bennett Marine is seeking a Summer Manufacturing Engineering Intern to gain hands-on experience in a high-mix, high-quality manufacturing environment. This role offers exposure to process improvement, automation, Lean manufacturing, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives.
As an Engineering Intern, you will work alongside Manufacturing Engineers to evaluate production processes, support safety and quality initiatives, and help drive improvements that directly impact cost, productivity, and efficiency on the shop floor.
This internship is ideal for engineering students who want meaningful, resume-building experience and the opportunity to see their work implemented in a real production environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support cost reduction initiatives by leading small projects or contributing to larger cross-functional efforts; generate and evaluate ideas for sustainable cost savings.
  • Support productivity and waste reduction initiatives using Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Assist with capital equipment projects, including:
    • Creating conceptual layouts and drawings
    • Developing equipment specifications and bid documentation
    • Supporting vendor selection, installation, and start-up
    • Creating work instructions for production use
  • Assist with the commissioning of new equipment to ensure efficient installation with minimal production disruption.
  • Train and support machine operators and troubleshoot equipment within assigned departments.
  • Support ergonomic improvement initiatives, both short-term safety improvements and long-term capital and process solutions.
  • Perform Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) analysis to reduce downtime, improve throughput, and minimize scrap or rework.
  • Participate in and/or lead Kaizen and continuous improvement events.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance and Production to develop:
    • Preventive maintenance plans
    • Operator daily maintenance checklists
    • Supporting technical documentation
  • Support error-proofing (Poka-Yoke) efforts; gain exposure to PLC concepts and control logic.
  • Perform time studies to ensure standard times and costs are accurate within the SAP MRP system.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of new products, processes, and manufacturing systems.
  • Support Production in developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training operators, team leads, supervisors, and managers.
  • Assist with the design of fixtures, jigs, and tooling using SolidWorks to improve safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Support the Quality team with root cause analysis, corrective actions, and scrap reduction initiatives.
  • Provide technical support using Microsoft Excel, SolidWorks, and other engineering tools.
  • Maintain a professional, collaborative, and safety-focused work environment.
  • Complete additional engineering projects as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial, or related field).
  • Demonstrated application of engineering fundamentals and problem-solving techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in creating technical documentation using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and related tools.
  • Exposure to CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) is a plus.
  • Interest in manufacturing, continuous improvement, automation, and hands-on engineering work.

Why This Internship Rocks
Real Manufacturing Engineering Experience
This isn't a "shadowing" internship. You'll work directly on the shop floor solving real production problems-improving processes, reducing waste, analyzing downtime, and supporting equipment installations that actually go into operation.
Hands-On Projects You Can Put on Your Resume
From time studies and OEE analysis to fixture design, capital projects, and Lean initiatives, you'll graduate with tangible accomplishments you can confidently talk about in interviews.
Exposure to Lean, Automation & Continuous Improvement
Get practical experience with Kaizen events, error-proofing (Poka-Yoke), ergonomic improvements, and preventive maintenance-key skills employers look for in Manufacturing Engineers.
Work with Industry-Standard Tools
Build experience using SolidWorks, SAP MRP, and Excel-based engineering analysis tools while learning how engineering decisions impact cost, quality, safety, and delivery.
See the Full Lifecycle of Manufacturing Projects
Participate in projects from concept and vendor quoting through installation, commissioning, and operator training-giving you a true end-to-end view of manufacturing engineering.
Mentorship from Experienced Engineers
You'll work alongside Manufacturing Engineers, Maintenance, Quality, and Production teams who are invested in your development and eager to teach.
Be Part of a Global Brand
As part of the Yamaha family, you'll gain experience at a company known worldwide for engineering excellence, innovation, and quality.
Make an Impact-Fast
Your ideas matter here. Intern contributions are visible, valued, and often implemented during the internship-not months later.
