What does an internship game designer do?

An Internship Game Designer assists in creating and developing the concepts, mechanics, and features of video games under the guidance of senior designers. They often help brainstorm ideas, build prototypes, document design specifications, and test gameplay for balance and fun. To thrive as an Internship Game Designer, you need a basic understanding of game design principles, creativity, and familiarity with game development processes, often supported by coursework or a related degree. Experience with tools such as Unity, Unreal Engine, or Adobe Creative Suite, and a portfolio of design work or prototypes is highly valued. Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills help interns contribute effectively to team projects and adapt to feedback. These skills and qualifications are crucial for creating engaging game experiences and for learning quickly in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an internship game designer?

As an Internship Game Designer, you'll typically be involved in tasks such as brainstorming new game mechanics, creating design documentation, and assisting with level or narrative design. You may also help playtest prototypes, gather feedback, and collaborate closely with artists, programmers, and senior designers. Interns often get the opportunity to contribute to real features and see how their ideas impact the development process. This hands-on experience is valuable for building your portfolio and understanding the full game development lifecycle.
