Job Description
Job Title: PARAPROFESSIONAL
General Description
Provide support services for teachers and administrators by performing instructional and clerical assignments within established procedures and standard practices.
Reports To: Building principal
Work Schedule: 7 hours per day, 10 months (183 days)
Essential Duties:
(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Provides one-on-one tutoring and small group instructional assistance under the supervision of the classroom teacher
  • Assists in preparing and organizing instructional materials
  • Provides instructional assistance in the computer lab
  • Provides instructional assistance in the library media center
  • Assists in parental involvement activities
  • Participates in professional development activities as deemed necessary by the supervisor
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Possesses some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and clerical procedures
  • Possesses some knowledge of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others
  • Demonstrates ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor
  • Demonstrates ability to perform basic clerical tasks, communicate effectively orally and in writing and ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Demonstrates ability to work well with students, staff, and parents in a professional manner

Education and Experience:
  • Required: 2-year degree or 48 hours of completed college coursework at an accredited college or university
  • Preferred: Prior experience working with groups of children
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Demonstrates overall good health
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate and interact with others.

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Sussex
County School Board's policy manual.
