Job description

Job Description Summary
Under immediate supervision, this position assists with the preparation, set up, break down, and clean-up of the biological science laboratories according to the type of lab activities and experiments performed using established procedures and in compliance with all safety regulations.
This position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans' Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Certain service members may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in the employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

Minimum Education:
Associate's degree.
An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
Minimum Experience/Training:
Three or more years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting that includes hazardous material training.
Essential Functions:
Daily - 25%: Assists in the preparation of labs according to the assigned functional discipline, such as anatomy, biology, zoology, botany, microbiology. Laboratory preparation involves presentation of all materials required for the appropriate activity or experiment, including glassware, benchtop equipment, media, living specimens, models, chemical solutions, microscopes, etc.
Daily - 20%: Assists with preparation of chemical solutions and media, which may include calculating appropriate concentrations, measuring and weighing, heating and cooling, dispensing in appropriate containers, and use of equipment such as analytical balances, toploading balances, and autoclaves.
Daily - 20%: Returns the lab to the condition present before the day's activities by cleaning and returning all materials, sanitizing surfaces and supplies, and making any minor repairs as necessary.
Daily - 10%: Assists lab manager with maintaining samples of living organisms, including microorganisms using aseptic technique, protozoa, fruitflies, marine organisms in a saltwater environment, plants, and terrestrial arthropods.
Daily - 5%: Assists lab manager with maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment applicable to the functional discipline.
Daily - 5%: Disposes of all waste materials properly according to established safety and regulatory protocols
Other - 5%: Assists faculty with lab activities.
Other - 5%: Maintains laboratory equipment to assure safe and reliable operation by cleaning as needed and testing/calibration before class begins.
Other - 5%: Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Operational knowledge and understanding in area of responsibility (biology, microbiology, zoology, botany).
Intermediate knowledge, understanding and skills in area of responsibility required; including an understanding of concepts and principles of related areas and functions, i.e. Financial Aid Specialist must have a general understanding of the student registration function
Ability to set priorities for self, manage own time, effort and activities as well as contribute as an active team member
Ability to understand the goals, policies, and objectives of the unit, and standards for own job
Requires intermediate knowledge of computer systems, i.e. Microsoft Office products as well as specialized computer systems e.g. Human Resources Information Systems, Student Financial Systems, Purchasing Systems, etc.
Ability to interact and effectively communicate with a diverse population of employees and students
