A computer assistant uses their technical and communication skills to help people troubleshoot problems with their computers. Sometimes referred to as technical support or customer support staff, computer assistants know about computers and the software they run. Their primary job duties include listening to customers describe the problems they are having and then walking them through a series of steps to get any issues resolved. Depending on the company you work for, you may also assist employees with their computer setups and help develop training guides. Some computer assistants work in call centers while others communicate exclusively through online chat or email. The minimum educational qualifications for this career include a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, although some employers may prefer you to have an associate degree in computer science and previous experience in a similar role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Assistant, you need strong knowledge of computer hardware, software applications, troubleshooting techniques, and typically at least an associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with operating systems, office productivity software, basic networking, and help desk ticketing systems is commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and patience are valuable soft skills for this position. These skills ensure efficient technical support, minimize downtime, and foster a productive work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by computer assistants in supporting end-users, and how can they effectively address them?

Job description

Description
Hillsdale College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Computer Science beginning in August 2027. The teaching load is three courses per semester at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum.
Hillsdale College is a small (1500 students), fiercely independent Christian liberal arts college dedicated to the perpetuation of freedom through serious learning and moral formation. It is committed to the Western intellectual tradition and requires genuine excellence in undergraduate teaching. Applicants should familiarize themselves with the College's mission statement: https://www.hillsdale.edu/about/mission/.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers majors in mathematics and applied mathematics, and minors in mathematics and computer science. The department graduates approximately 35 majors per year, an extraordinarily high number for a liberal arts college of our size and enjoys a high degree of student engagement in extracurricular activities such as the Artificial Intelligence Society, colloquium series, mathematics honor society, problem-solving seminar, and applied mathematics club.
Review of applications will begin on October 12, 2026 and continue until the position is filled or closed.
Qualifications
Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field by the beginning of the appointment. Those with a master's degree and strong qualifications may also be considered. The area of scholarly expertise is open. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, an understanding of computer science vis-à-vis the liberal arts, and an ability to collaborate in the design and maintenance of the curriculum in a small department.
Application Instructions
A complete application consists of a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of response to the Hillsdale College Mission Statement; teaching statement; research statement; graduate transcript; and at least three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses the candidate's skill as a teacher.
For additional information, contact David Gaebler at dgaebler@hillsdale.edu.
