Job Description

AbbVie is seeking a talented Competitive Intelligence (CI) professional to join a leading Immunology portfolio in the pharmaceutical industry. Successful candidates will be proven leaders, who are able to thrive in a dynamic environment, and have a track record of delivering insights that drive successful commercial strategies and tactics.

The Immunology CI Lead is part of the International Marketing Analytics and Business Intelligence (IMABI) team. The Immunology CI Lead supports strategic commercial efforts by providing objective, in-depth, and actionable intelligence about current and future market and competitive forces. The CI Lead is a strategic advisor to AbbVie’s International Brand Teams (on-market and late-stage pipeline) with deep expertise in current and future competitive drivers in the marketplace as well as functional expertise in how to use competitive intelligence to inform strategy. 

Key Responsibilities Includes:

  • Provide an objective commercial viewpoint of potential disruptive forces and pending market and competitive drivers, based on an in-depth understanding and analysis of healthcare dynamics, commercial, clinical, and scientific competitive information
  • Lead CI strategy within specified therapeutic area(s) to ensure franchise teams have actionable intelligence by escalating the business implications of AbbVie's competitors (new & established) activities and disruptive market events / trends to near and long-term strategies
  • Drive and execute CI plan by leading the collection of CI from secondary and primary sources, managing external vendors, and synthesizing and disseminating intelligence and associated implications
  • Coordinate, plan and execute company-wide CI activities at International & US scientific conferences (~2-3 annually) and consolidate and report back critical findings and implications
  • Act as CI expert, demonstrating awareness and understanding of appropriate CI applications and key internal and external data/information sources
  • Build effective, collaborative working relationships across IMABI, International Immunology brand teams, cross-functional partners, and Affiliates. Partner with these teams to incorporate clinical, medical, access, regulatory, market research perspectives into CI’s viewpoint and implications
  • Ensure all CI activities are conducted in accordance with financial and ethical compliance guidelines
  • Partner with other CI teams to optimize AbbVie's CI investment
  • Be an active contributor to the growth and evolution of Competitive Intelligence capabilities across AbbVie by sharing best practices, innovative techniques, and lessons learned
  • Successfully managing competitive intelligence research within agreed upon budgets and timelines; managing competitive intelligence vendors to deliver to expectations on time and within budgets.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Ability to shape decision making by leveraging insights from CI research
  • Depth of knowledge across a broad range of research tools and techniques, including secondary data sources 
  • Understanding of the key driving trends in the healthcare environment which are shaping the market
  • Understanding of the brand and portfolio strategy and provides input into the strategy
  • Successfully negotiate and prioritize workload demand
  • Contribute to a productive work culture by creating trust and respect within the department
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required (life science or related degree is a plus). MBA or related graduate degree is preferred. Master’s or PhD in life science discipline is a plus
  • 7-9 years of experience in the pharma/biotech in a commercial or strategy role and/or management consulting experience, with 3+ years of experience in CI
  • Global Immunology experience preferred
  • Analytical reasoning abilities, intellectual curiosity, strong business acumen, and creativity in problem solving
  • Excellent communication (orally and in writing) and interpersonal skills, at all levels of the organization (from Product Managers to Senior Executives)
  • Expertise in PowerPoint and crafting executive-level presentations
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed environment and standing out as a successful collaborator
  • Experience influencing cross-functional, global and affiliate teams and with senior leadership
  • Ability to be agile & nimble to changing business conditions, strong collaboration, and teamwork across functional groups to contribute to a productive work culture. Lead strategically and create trust and respect within the department.
  • Strategic thinker – can see big picture opportunities and translate into actionable plans but can also understand the details
