Department Information

Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, which is dedicated to supporting students¿ health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer a variety of programs across two multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more. Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Job Summary
The Part-Time Team Leader is a key leadership position responsible for providing guidance to hourly staff and supporting daily operations across Recreational Sports facilities. This position offers a great opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills and become part of a supportive campus community. You'll also gain valuable experience in customer service, conflict resolution, time management, and teamwork skills that are transferable to any future career.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership and guidance to hourly staff across multiple program areas.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for on-site/on-call professional staff.
  • Supports emergency response efforts including evacuations, incidents, and accidents.
  • Communicates effectively with staff through in-person interactions and shift reports.
  • Provides constructive feedback and coaching to staff.
  • Educates participants on facility and program policies.
  • Performs facility checks including lock/unlock procedures and inspections.
  • Collaborates with professional staff and program areas to ensure smooth operations.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
  • General knowledge at the high school level
Preferred
  • Some college
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 1 semester of demonstrated success in current IU Recreational Sports position
Preferred
  • Experience providing peer leadership or staff support
SKILLS

Working Conditions / Demands
These positions require standing for long periods of time and frequently moving about the workspace. Positions require working both indoors and outdoors and ability to move up to 50 pounds with assistance. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary
$14.75 per hour
Work Hours
10 hours per week with more available for evening and weekends.
No more than 29 hours per week across all IU jobs.
