Job description

GREENVILLE TOGETHER: COMMUNITY NAVIGATOR

About Greenville Together

Greenville’s United Effort to Functionally End Homelessness

Greenville Together: A Home for All is a coordinated, community-wide initiative—backed by United Way of Greenville County—committed to functionally ending unsheltered homelessness in Greenville. Our goal is to prevent homelessness whenever possible, and when it does occur, ensure it is rare, brief, and non-recurring through a comprehensive, systems-level response.

Position Title: Community Navigator
Reports To: Housing Program Manager

Position Summary

Community Navigators work directly with individuals experiencing homelessness to support rapid placement into permanent housing through Greenville Together’s Rapid Exit, Shelter to Home, and Street-to-Home programs. Navigators carry a blended caseload, providing housing-focused, short-term support that emphasizes speed, stabilization, and participant choice. This role is field-based, relationship-driven, and critical to frontline housing outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Participant Engagement + Housing Support

  • Engage individuals in shelters and unsheltered settings through warm referrals and outreach coordination.

  • Conduct assessments, gather required documentation, and develop housing plans.

  • Prepare participants for housing placement and support move-in processes.

Housing Coordination

  • Work closely with the Systemwide Housing Navigator to identify and secure housing units.

  • Coordinate with landlords, shelters, outreach teams, and partners to support placements.

  • Assist participants with flex fund requests and immediate stabilization needs.

Stabilization + Follow-Up

  • Provide short-term, light-touch stabilization support (typically 30–90 days).

  • Monitor participant progress and address barriers to housing stability.

  • Maintain accurate participant records and documentation.

Field-Based Work

  • Conduct regular fieldwork, including shelter visits, community meetings, and engagement in unsheltered locations.

  • Respond flexibly to urgent needs in fast-paced environments.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in homeless services, outreach, case management, housing navigation, or related human services work. Relevant lived experience may be considered in place of formal work history where appropriate.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, or a related field preferred, but not required.

  • Relevant experience and/or lived experience related to homelessness or housing instability will be strongly considered.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and engagement skills.

  • Comfort working in community-based and non-traditional settings.

  • Commitment to trauma-informed, person-centered practice.

United Way of Greenville County offers competitive compensation based on prior experience and qualifications as well as comprehensive benefits in order to best support our people.
