Job description

Hospice Aide

Location: Patient homes (local travel required)

Job Type: PRN


Job Summary

As a Hospice Aide, you will provide compassionate personal healthcare and related services to patients in their place of residence. You will help maintain a safe and clean environment, work closely with patients and their families, and communicate observations to the supervising Registered Nurse. This role is vital in supporting the dignity and comfort of patients during hospice care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and according to the Aide Plan of Care.
  • Assist patients with safe transfers, ambulation, and activities of daily living.
  • Report changes in patient condition and document care provided to ensure continuity.
  • Practice infection control and maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
  • Communicate respectfully and supportively with patients, families, and team members.
  • Respect patient privacy and property at all times.
  • Assist with nutrition and fluid intake as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities (QAPI program).
  • Perform treatments and procedures as directed by Hospice policy.
  • Demonstrate effective time management and contribute to efficient hospice operations.
  • Promote the philosophy, mission, and policies of the Hospice organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma preferred. Must have completed one of the following:
    • State-approved training/competency evaluation program as specified in Medicare regulations (§418.76).
    • Nurse aide training/competency evaluation program approved by the state and listed in good standing on the state nurse aide registry.
    • State licensure program meeting Medicare requirements.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience as a Hospice Aide or Nursing Assistant in a hospital, nursing home, home health agency, hospice, or long-term care facility, or completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Home Health Aide Program.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to read, write, and verbally report clinical information.
    • Demonstrated interest in the welfare of the ill and elderly.
    • Successful completion of Aide Competency Evaluation Skills Checklist and written Skills Test.
  • Transportation: Reliable transportation, current auto insurance, and a valid driver’s license required


Working Conditions

  • Work in patients’ homes under various conditions, including possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
  • Flexible schedule and local travel required.
  • Some exposure to unpleasant weather.


Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with patient mobility.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions, meet deadlines, and respond to patient and family needs.
  • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination required.
  • Ability to use durable medical equipment in the home.
