What types of projects and tasks can a Commissioning Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Commissioning Intern, you can expect to support the commissioning team by assisting with project documentation, equipment inspections, and functional performance testing of building systems such as HVAC, lighting, and plumbing. You'll often help gather and analyze data, prepare reports, and track project milestones under the supervision of experienced engineers or project managers. This hands-on experience gives you insight into the commissioning process, including site visits and collaboration with contractors, design teams, and facility managers. The role provides an excellent opportunity to build technical knowledge and develop teamwork and communication skills in a real-world setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commissioning Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commissioning Intern, you typically need a background in engineering or building sciences, strong analytical skills, and a basic understanding of HVAC, electrical, and building systems. Familiarity with commissioning software, energy modeling tools, and industry standards such as LEED or ASHRAE is often required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn are essential soft skills for collaborating with project teams and solving problems on site. These skills ensure accurate documentation, efficient project delivery, and successful building system performance.

What are Commissioning Interns?

Commissioning Interns are entry-level professionals who assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of commissioning processes for buildings or industrial projects. Their responsibilities often include supporting senior engineers, conducting equipment checks, documenting systems performance, and ensuring that all building systems meet project requirements. This role provides hands-on experience in areas such as HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems, making it ideal for students or recent graduates in engineering or related fields. Commissioning Interns work under the supervision of experienced staff and gain practical insights into quality assurance and project management.
