Commission Vibration Engineers focus on installing and commissioning vibration systems in industrial settings, ensuring equipment operates within specifications. Vibration Analysts primarily analyze vibration data to diagnose issues and predict failures. While both roles require vibration analysis skills and certifications, Commission Vibration Engineers are more involved in the installation and commissioning process, whereas Vibration Analysts focus on ongoing data analysis and troubleshooting.

What does a vibration engineer do?

A vibration engineer analyzes and measures vibrations in machinery and structures to ensure safety, reliability, and performance. They use tools like accelerometers and data analysis software to identify issues, develop solutions, and prevent equipment failure, often working in industrial or manufacturing environments. Knowledge of mechanical systems, testing procedures, and relevant standards is essential for this role.

Do commissioning engineers make good money?

Commissioning vibration engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. They often require specialized skills in vibration analysis, testing, and equipment calibration, which can lead to higher compensation levels. Overall, the role can be financially rewarding for those with technical expertise and certifications in the field.

Job description

About Radiant

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the worldโ€™s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The companyโ€™s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiantโ€™s unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

About the Role

Radiant is seeking aย Lead Test Engineer, Power Generationย to own the strategy, execution, and team leadership for testing the power generation system including turbomachinery, heat exchangers, controls, and primary cooling systems. This role is ideal for a hands-on technical leader who enjoys building test infrastructure, running complex hardware, and mentoring engineers and technicians whileย remainingย deeply involved in day-to-day testing.ย

You will lead testing development for our high-speed machinery and own creating our test site from the ground up.ย This test infrastructure will be used to iterate quickly on our designs evaluating vibration, performance, thermal behavior, and system reliability in development and transition into acceptance testing for production units. This role works closely with mechanical design, analysis, manufacturing, and operations teams to ensure turbomachinery designs areย validated, robust, andย production-ready.ย

Responsibilities & Duties:ย

Test Site & Infrastructure Developmentย

  • Lead requirements definition, design, and implementation ofย Radiantโ€™sย test site.

  • Design, build, commission, andย maintainย test rigs, fixtures,ย instrumentation,ย and support systems forย turbomachinery, heat exchangers, controls, and primary cooling systems.ย

  • Establish operating procedures, safety controls, and facility readiness for high-speed, high-energy, and high-temperature test environments.ย

Test Strategy, Planning & Technical Ownershipย

  • Own and lead the turbomachinery test strategy across development, qualification, and production acceptance phases.ย

  • Define testย objectives, plans, success criteria, instrumentation strategies, and data requirements for high-speed rotating machinery and supporting thermal-fluid systems.ย

  • Serve as the technical authority for vibration,ย rotordynamic, and bearing-related testing.ย

  • Translate analytical predictions (critical speeds, stability margins, transient response) into targeted test campaigns thatย validateย design assumptions and retire risk.ย

  • Balance test coverage, technical risk, schedule, and hardware availability to enable rapid iteration whileย maintainingย safety and rigor.ย

Test Execution & Data Analysisย

  • Plan and execute development, qualification, and acceptance tests including startup/shutdown, transient, off-design, and endurance testing.ย

  • Operate test hardware hands-on with a strong emphasis on repeatability, data quality, and safety.ย

  • Analyze test data to assess vibration behavior,ย rotordynamicย stability, bearing performance, thermal response, and overall system performance.ย

  • Compare test results against analytical predictions and work with design teams to resolve discrepancies.ย

  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to conduct root cause investigations, identify anomalies or failures, and implement corrective actions supported by test evidence.

Technical Leadership & Team Developmentย

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to test engineers and technicians.ย

  • Act as a player-coach: remain hands-on while scaling testing capability, throughput, and organizational maturity.ย

  • Support hiring, onboarding, and technical development of turbomachinery test personnel.ย

  • Develop work estimates, test schedules, and status updates for program leadership.ย

  • Review and approve test procedures, reports, and data packages.ย

  • Establish standards for test documentation, data management, and knowledge capture.ย

  • Help matureย Radiantโ€™sย turbomachinery test processes, labs, and safety culture over time.
