What is a commission automotive technical writer?

A Commission Automotive Technical Writer is a professional who creates technical documentation, manuals, and guides related to automotive products, systems, and repairs, typically working on a commission or freelance basis. Their work involves translating complex automotive information into clear, user-friendly content for mechanics, customers, or internal staff. They may collaborate with engineers, product developers, and other automotive professionals to ensure accuracy and clarity. The commission aspect means they are paid per project or document, rather than as a salaried employee. This role requires strong writing skills, technical automotive knowledge, and attention to detail.

To thrive as a Commission Automotive Technical Writer, you need a strong understanding of automotive systems, technical writing expertise, and typically a degree in English, communications, or engineering. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, user-friendly documentation are vital soft skills. These skills ensure the production of accurate, accessible materials that support technicians, customers, and regulatory compliance in the automotive industry.

What are some common challenges faced by commission-based automotive technical writers, and how can they be addressed?

Commission automotive technical writers often face the challenge of balancing multiple projects with varying deadlines, as work volume can fluctuate based on client demand. Building a strong network within the automotive industry and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the latest technologies can help writers secure consistent commissions and produce high-quality content. Effective time management, clear communication with clients, and ongoing skill development are key strategies for success in this role.

Summary
Title: Bill of Materials Writer ID: 1359 Department: Bill of Materials Location: Goshen IN Company: Keystone RV, Dutchmen RV, Crossroads RV
More about this job >
Description

Keystone RV is looking for a detail-oriented Bill of Material (BOM) Writer / Costing Specialist who enjoys working with data, solving problems, and getting "hands-on" on the production floor.

This role blends office work with time in the production environment. You'll build and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), support cost tracking through month-end reporting analytics, and play a key role in ensuring cost and product data are accurate, consistent, and reflective of what's actually happening on the production line.

You'll work in a casual, team-focused manufacturing environment where people pitch in, communicate openly, and take pride in building quality products.

What You'll Do

  • Create and maintain BOMs for Travel Trailer and 5th Wheel RVs
  • Update BOMs based on Product Change Notices (PCNs)
  • Collaborate with sales, engineering, and production as part of the product team, providing cost data and estimates to support development decisions
  • Spend time on the production floor checking materials, components, and builds
  • Research & reconcile differences between cost expectations, BOMs, actual builds
  • Help keep product data clean, accurate, and up to date

Who We're Looking For

  • Detail-oriented and comfortable working with numbers and data
  • Ability to read a tape measure and perform unit of measure conversions
  • Excel skills (formulas & formatting are a must; analytic tools are a plus)
  • Comfortable working in both an office and a manufacturing environment
  • Strong communicator and team player
  • Organized, reliable, and willing to learn

Why This Role?

  • You'll see the full picture-from data in the system to the product being built
  • No two days are exactly the same
  • Your work directly impacts production accuracy and cost decisions
  • You'll learn both manufacturing and financial sides of business

Experience Desired

  • Manufacturing, RV, automotive, or similar environments
  • Background in product costing and/or accounting
  • College coursework in Accounting, Finance, Business, Engineering, or related field
  • Experience with ERP systems (like Microsoft Dynamics AX)

Work Environment

  • Split between office and production floor
  • Casual, hands-on manufacturing setting
  • Collaborative team where people help each other get things done
