What is a combustion?

A Combustion job typically involves working with combustion systems, such as engines, furnaces, boilers, or turbines, to ensure efficient fuel burning and emissions control. Professionals in this field may design, test, maintain, and troubleshoot combustion equipment in industries like automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing. They often analyze fuel performance, optimize combustion processes, and ensure compliance with environmental standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the combustion position?

To thrive as a Combustion Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, deep knowledge of thermodynamics and combustion processes, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS Fluent, MATLAB, and proficiency in combustion analysis tools are typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork skills enable success in cross-functional project environments. These competencies are vital to ensure safe, efficient, and innovative solutions for combustion systems in industries like power generation and automotive engineering.

What are some typical challenges combustion engineers face in their daily work?

Combustion engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing fuel efficiency while minimizing emissions, troubleshooting complex system malfunctions, and staying up to date with evolving environmental regulations. They may need to balance theoretical designs with real-world constraints in manufacturing and operational settings. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, they are often involved in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance performance and safety. Successfully navigating these challenges helps drive innovation and effectiveness in combustion-related projects.

What does a combustion technician do?

A combustion technician inspects, maintains, and repairs combustion systems such as boilers, furnaces, and burners to ensure safe and efficient operation. Job description

ABOUT ROCKET LAB

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more – all with the goal of opening access to space. The rockets and satellites we build and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations.

Our Electron rocket has become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.

NEUTRON

Rocket Lab's Neutron team is responsible for bringing our new large rocket Neutron and its launch and test sites to life. From designing and testing Neutron's structures and components, to firing up its new Archimedes engines, to setting up Neutron's launch pads and test sites across the United States, joining the Neutron team is your opportunity to help launch a new large rocket for the very first time.

SENIOR COMBUSTION DEVICES ENGINEER II / PRINCIPAL COMBUSTION DEVICES ENGINEER

Based out of Rocket Lab's headquarters in Long Beach, CA, the Principal/Senior Combustion Devices Engineer will be responsible for the development of one or more combustion devices (preburners, main injectors, thrust chambers assemblies and vacuum nozzles). These devices are an integral portion of the 200,000 lbf Archimedes engine, which operates in a demanding but efficient ox-rich, staged combustion architecture.

In this role, you'll take ownership of all aspects of a component: design and analysis, manufacturing and test support, and successful flights and subsequent, high-cadence, re-flights. By doing so, you will help propel the Neutron rocket, expanding human capabilities in space and providing value to the company and its shareholders.

Please note: This position can be hired as a Senior Combustion Devices Engineer II or Principal Combustion Devices Engineer Level.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

  • Design, analyze, and perform trades studies to achieve programmatic targets.
  • Define requirements, test and flight qualification plans.
  • Work with the interface owners, like turbomachinery and engine systems teams, to make a high-end product that could be iterated fast and seamlessly.
  • Work with manufacturing and build engineers to design easily manufacturable, cost-effective, beautiful parts.
  • Work with the test and launch teams to interpret data and provide solutions to enable a high cadence – of tests, flights and re-flights.

AS A SENIOR COMBUSTION DEVICES ENGINEER II, YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent
  • 8+ years of combustion device design experience
  • In-depth knowledge of combustion and fluid dynamics, heat transfer and structural mechanics.
  • Fundamental understanding of design principals and manufacturing methods.

AS A PRINCIPAL COMBUSTION DEVICES ENGINEER, YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent
  • 12+ years of combustion device design experience
  • In-depth knowledge of combustion and fluid dynamics, heat transfer and structural mechanics.
  • Fundamental understanding of design principals and manufacturing methods.

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

  • Master's or a PhD.
  • Advanced proficiency in NX, ANSYS Mechanical, StarCCM, MATLAB and GD&T.
  • Proficiency in niche software like: TDK, ROCCID, PERCORP, CEA, ROCETS.
  • Reacting flow CFD.
  • Expertise in high-speed data/video analysis in time and frequency domains.
  • Experience with designing reusable, propulsively landing rocket engines.
  • Experience in an iterative and scrappy development environment.

This position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer work, and occasional exposure to moderate levels of noise, dust, and fumes in production areas

Level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of our total rewards package at Rocket Lab. Employees may also receive company equity and access to a robust benefits package including: top tier medical HMO, PPO & a 100% company-sponsored medical HSA plan option, dental and vision coverage, 3 weeks paid vacation and 5 days sick leave per year, 11 paid holidays per year, flexible spending and dependent care savings accounts, paid parental leave, disability insurance, life insurance, and access to a 401(k) retirement plan with company match. Other perks include: Discounted employee stock purchase program, subsidized EV charging stations, onsite gym, food and drinks, and other discounts.
