This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and performing activities for the Chatham County Fire Department, including fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials release mitigation, and emergency medical care, inspections, investigations, training, resource management, and support functions of an assigned fire company. Duties also include managing assigned programs such as monthly supplies, equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus maintenance, etc. Incumbents may also be assigned to special projects at the discretion of the Fire Chief to perform specific administrative duties in support of the department's mission, vision, and goals; performs directly related work as required.
This position is considered part of the Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) critical workforce and subject to call back. The Fire Lieutenant may serve as the Division/Group Supervisor or other position during a disaster or emergency activation of the CCFD Incident Management Team. The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide leadership and supervision of fire department activities, ensuring the effective delivery of fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue, hazardous material mitigation, and community risk reduction services.
This includes overseeing assigned programs, such as inspections, investigations, training, and resource management, in alignment with the department's mission, vision, and goals. Examples of Duties The work is performed under the direction of a Battalion Chief, with significant latitude for independent judgment, particularly during emergency response operations. Supervisory responsibilities encompass mentoring and managing subordinate personnel, including Apparatus Operators and Firefighters, to maintain operational readiness, safety, and adherence to departmental policies.
The nature of the work performed requires establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with departmental leadership, emergency service agencies, community stakeholders, including the Battalion Chief, Fire Chief, other Command Staff and County personnel, elected and appointed officials, representatives of Federal, State, County and municipal agencies, medical and associated agencies, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed across various environments, including office, station, and field settings, often involving exposure to hazardous conditions and requiring adaptability, decisive action, and commitment to the department's operational excellence. The various environmental exposures may involve: Exposure to high humidity, extreme cold and hot temperatures, and severe weather conditions; Exposure to loud noise, and vibrations from tools, equipment, machinery, etc.; Exposure to hazardous conditions such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, burns, explosives, heights, fast-moving vehicles, medical patients, viruses and diseases, and atmospheric conditions such as liquids, fumes, gases, odors, dust, particulates, and poor ventilation

Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree from a Department of Education-accredited college or university, or documented equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to function in the position; and Four (4) years of continuous and current full-time (paid) service in a career municipal, county, or state fire department; Four(4)yearsfull-time (paid)experienceasa certifiedfront-linestructural firefighter; Two (2) years of experience as a pumper driver/operator; One (1) year experience as an acting Fire Lieutenant of an operational structural firefighting company; One (1) year of experience as lead instructor teaching fire related topics that demonstrates the required knowledge, abilities, behaviors, and traits to successfully perform the essential functions of a fire instructor; or An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work; Experience must exhibit a consistent pattern of participation in implementing and supporting organizational goals, personal and professional growth, and increasing organizational responsibility. Background and Motor Vehicle History Investigation: Applicants must undergo an extensive national background investigation in accordance with the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) rules and regulations.
