What is a cold formed steel?

A Cold Formed Steel (CFS) job typically involves the design, engineering, fabrication, or installation of structural and non-structural steel components made from thin-gauge, cold-rolled steel. Professionals in this field work on projects such as framing for buildings, load-bearing wall systems, roofing, and other steel structures. Responsibilities may include structural analysis, drafting construction plans, ensuring code compliance, and coordinating with architects and contractors. CFS jobs are common in commercial, residential, and industrial construction due to the material's lightweight, high strength, and cost-effectiveness.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for someone working in a cold formed steel position?

In a Cold Formed Steel position, your daily responsibilities often include designing and analyzing steel components, preparing technical drawings, and reviewing specifications to ensure compliance with industry standards. You may also collaborate closely with architects, contractors, and fabrication teams to address project requirements, resolve technical issues, and support the installation process. Additional tasks might involve site visits, quality inspections, and documentation of project progress. This role requires a mix of office-based design work and hands-on coordination, offering a dynamic work environment for those interested in both engineering and field operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a cold formed steel position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Cold Formed Steel role, you need a strong understanding of structural engineering principles, material science, and experience with steel fabrication or design, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical training. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software, structural analysis tools, and familiarity with industry codes such as AISI or ASTM standards is important. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are highly valuable soft skills in this position. These competencies are critical to ensuring the safety, efficiency, and quality of cold-formed steel projects in construction and manufacturing settings.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Design Engineer with a strong background in cold-formed steel (CFS) and proficiency in Autodesk Revit.

This role will focus on the structural design, analysis, modeling, and documentation of steel-framed commercial and industrial building projects. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with cold-formed/light-gauge steel framing and be comfortable working from concept through construction documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze cold-formed steel and structural steel framing systems.
  • Develop structural models, drawings, plans, sections, and details using Autodesk Revit.
  • Perform structural calculations for framing members, connections, bracing, and load paths.
  • Design wall systems, headers, beams, joists, framing, and related steel components.
  • Evaluate gravity, wind, seismic, and other applicable building loads.
  • Review architectural and structural drawings for design requirements and conflicts.
  • Coordinate designs with architects, engineers, project managers, detailers, and construction teams.
  • Update Revit models and drawings based on engineering revisions, RFIs, and project changes.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable AISI, ASCE, IBC, and related building codes.
  • Support preparation of accurate construction and fabrication documentation.

Qualifications

  • Experience in structural steel design, preferably with significant cold-formed steel / light-gauge steel experience.
  • Strong proficiency with Autodesk Revit / Revit Structure.
  • Experience performing structural calculations and member sizing.
  • Knowledge of structural framing, load paths, bracing, and steel connections.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural construction documents.
  • Familiarity with AISI, ASCE 7, and IBC design standards.
  • Experience with commercial and/or industrial building projects preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and technical problem-solving skills.

Education

Engineering degree preferred but not required. Relevant structural steel and cold-formed steel design experience may be considered in place of formal education.

Compensation

$80,000–$115,000 per year, depending on experience and technical capabilities.

If you have experience with cold-formed steel, structural steel design, and Revit, we encourage you to apply.
