Job description

Position Summary:

Supervised by the Coffee Factory Shift Supervisor who issues instructions and checks on work performed. Also directed by the Coffee Factory Operator. Capable of performing with a minimum of supervision during his or her shifts. Uses communication devices such as telephones, two-way radios and paging devices to contact supervision when required.

  • Operates, controls and adjusts Wet and Dry Coffee Plant equipment to maximize throughput with the minimum of losses while maximizing green bean quality in conformance with State of Hawaii, Department of Agricultural Standards for Kauai Coffee Grades (Standards).
  • Cleans, maintains and repairs Wet Plant, Dry Plant and storage equipment and facilities.

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge Requirements:

  • Tools & Equipment Knowledge: Conveyors, washers, ripe/or green cherry separators, pulpers, demucilage machines, dryers, weight scales, silos, de-stoner, moisture meters and analyzers, forklifts, truck and trailer, valves, hullers, polishers, size graders, density tables, color sorters, baggers, containers, logbooks, tags, hand tools, special tools for repair work, cleaning equipment, computerized controls, computer data terminals, etc.
  • Material Use: Coffee cherries, coffee parchment, green beans, air, super sacks, bulk handling crates, burlap bags, pallets, lubricants, cleaning agents, tags, etc.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and taking instructions in the English language. Incumbent must also be capable of lifting 100 pound coffee bags to shoulder height repetitively.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Responsible for all safety related matters including conducting safety meetings with assigned personnel.
  • Receives and unloads coffee cherries from tractor trailers or other means into coffee factory cherry receiving facilities.
  • Feeds, regulates the flow of cherries into and adjusts coffee cherry washing, cherry separation, pulping, demucilaging and drying equipment.
  • Loads coffee dryers, monitors dryer operating temperatures and coffee moisture levels, terminates the drying process at predetermined coffee moisture levels, unloads dryers, ensures the proper identification and storage of dry parchment coffee.
  • Retrieves from storage, parchment or green bean coffee for processing, re-bagging or shipment. Feeds parchment coffee or green bean coffee into appropriate locations of the plant.
  • Adjusts, operates conveying, de-stoner, hulling, polishing, sizing, density sorting and color sorting equipment to ensure efficient, effective operation of the equipment to produce green bean coffee within criteria set by the Standards.
  • Adjusts, operates bagging equipment to ensure that bags are properly filled to the correct weight, sewn and stacked.
  • Neatly and legibly logs, completes and/or enters data on computer terminals all information required to track plant input and output, report time, prepare coffee shipments, or make material requisitions.
  • Cleans and services all equipment on a regular basis. Performs minor repairs or properly reports the need for plant repairs to the shift supervisor. Assists plant maintenance personnel in plant repairs.
  • Rotates work shift as scheduled.
  • Performs other coffee factory functions as directed.
  • Safely operates lift trucks, trucks, and tractor trailer combinations to move coffee cherries into position for coffee factory receiving, pulp and parchment waste for receipt and disposal, and coffee parchment and beans for storage or processing.
  • Certification and/or licensing may be required (e.g., driver's license, professional license, etc.)
