Director of Coffee and Plant Operations

Abbotsford Road Coffee Specialists

Brooklyn, NY • On-site

Job description

ABOUT US:

Abbotsford Road is a specialty coffee roasting and wholesale distribution company based in Red

Hook, Brooklyn, with a northstar goal of 30 tons roasted and a clear mandate to professionalize and

scale its production operation. The Director of Coffee & Plant Operations is a newly created, hands-

on leadership role responsible for the full operational backbone of the business: the roasting plant

floor, the production team, green coffee sourcing and ordering, inventory accuracy, cash flow tied to

the order-to-cash cycle, packaging efficiency, and warehouse and delivery logistics.

This is an onsite, floor-present leadership role. The right person leads from the plant — working

alongside the Head Roaster and warehouse staff five days a week — while also owning the

systems, data, and vendor relationships that let the operation scale beyond its current capacity

ceiling.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN:

Plant Operations and Production Leadership

  • Own day-to-day operations of the Red Hook roasting plant, ensuring safe, consistent, and efficient daily run of the production floor.
  • Directly oversee the Head Roaster and the broader production and packing team, setting daily production targets and resolving floor-level constraints in real time.
  • Close the gap between theoretical and actual roasting capacity through structured time-study analysis before committing to staffing, shift, or equipment decisions.
  • Build and maintain standard operating procedures for roasting, packing, and plant safety, and ensure consistent application across shifts.

Green Coffee Buying and Inventory Management

  • Manage the end-to-end green coffee ordering cycle: forecasting need against the 30-ton roasted target, placing and tracking purchase orders, and managing supplier relationships and lead times.
  • Own inventory accuracy across green coffee, packaging materials, and finished goods, implementing cycle counts and reconciliation practices that production and finance can both rely on.
  • Maintain buffer stock and reorder-point discipline that protects production continuity without overcommitting working capital.

Cash Flow and Financial Oversight of Operations

  • Own the operational side of the order-to-cash cycle, including diagnosing and closing the gap between order entry, invoicing, and collections across the Rekki-to-Xero workflow.
  • Partner with Finance on cash flow visibility tied to green coffee purchasing, production costs, and accounts receivable, including coordination on payment release processes with affiliated entities.
  • Provide regular, accurate reporting on production costs, yield, waste, and inventory valuation to support company-wide financial planning.

Packaging Efficiency

  • Identify and implement packaging line efficiencies that reduce cost per unit while maintaining product quality and brand presentation standards.
  • Evaluate packaging materials, equipment, and changeover processes, and lead continuous improvement initiatives on the packing floor.

Warehouse Operations, Delivery Logistics and Shipping

  • Own warehouse operations end to end, including receiving, storage organization, pick/pack accuracy, and outbound shipping.
  • Oversee delivery logistics and routing to ensure on-time, accurate fulfillment for wholesale accounts, partnering closely with Sales and Customer Success on order cutoff policy and delivery commitments.
  • Manage relationships with shipping carriers and freight partners, and own service-level performance against cost.

Leadership and Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Reduce key-person concentration risk by building documented processes, cross-training, and coverage plans across production, training, and equipment servicing functions.
  • Partner with the commercial team to help build a sustainable framework for ancillary revenue streams (training, consulting, equipment servicing) that currently rely on undocumented expertise.
  • Bring a structured, metrics-driven operating cadence to the plant — regular reporting, clear ownership, and disciplined follow-through on action items.

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • 7+ years of progressive operations leadership experience in food or beverage manufacturing, production, or a comparable plant environment; specialty coffee roasting experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a P&L-adjacent operating function: inventory, procurement, cash how, or cost of goods, not just production throughput.
  • Direct experience managing warehouse operations, shipping, and delivery logistics for a wholesale or B2B distribution model.
  • Hands-on production software fluency (e.g., Cropster or comparable roasting/production systems) and comfort working across order and accounting platforms (e.g., Rekki, Xero, or equivalent).
  • A track record of building or fixing operational systems — not just operating within them — and diagnosing root-cause workflow issues rather than symptoms.
  • Strong people leadership: experience managing production teams directly, with the presence and judgment to lead from the floor five days a week.
  • SCA credentials (Roasting, Sensory, or Q Grader) are a plus but not required; what matters most is proven operational and supply chain leadership in a manufacturing environment.

COMPENSATION:

This role is budgeted at $105,000–$125,000 base salary, with final offer based on experience,

credentials, and demonstrated scope of prior responsibility, plus performance-based bonus eligibility.

This position is based full-time, onsite, at the Red Hook, Brooklyn production facility, five days per

week — this is not a hybrid or remote role.
