This position includes a variety of student supervision assignments, including supporting student management through restorative practices and supporting the safety and security of all students.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Youth Assistant


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITYย 
To aid their building by providing direct student support in social, academic and emotional affairs relative to the district's mission and goals.ย 


RESPONSIBILITIES
Supports the security and safety of students, all staff and agents;ย 
Supports the security of the premises owned by the school district;ย 
Supervises halls during class periods and passing times;
Reports all violations of laws, rules or regulations, as well as school policy;
Advises school administration of circumstances and/or situations which may create a potential harm or exposure;
Escorts students to administrator's office when necessary;
Assists with supervision of students during arrival and dismissal;ย 
Supervises lavatories and other common spaces;
Monitors and controls inappropriate use of school facilities;ย 
Assists administration with student management, including administering low level discipline consequences and using restorative practices to support student social/emotional well-being;ย 
Prepares reports and general paperwork for daily tasks;
Collaborate with school counselors, social workers, and teachers;ย 
Engages with building administration and Social Emotional Staff (SES) team members to build and monitor student relationships;ย 
Participate in professional learning related to roles and responsibilities, such as but not limited to TCIS, Threat Assessment, DASA, etc.);
Performs other related duties.
















QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of the practices and procedures necessary to maintain order and ensure the protection of life and security of buildings, grounds or equipment;
Ability to exercise sound judgment in carrying out monitoring and security duties;ย 
Working knowledge of conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, the Dignity for all Students Act (DASA) and threat assessment (training will be provided within the first year of service on Therapeutic Crisis Intervention in Schools (TCIS), DASA and Threat Assessment;ย 
Ability to understand and deal effectively with students, faculty and others; ability to learn restorative practices and techniques;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;ย 
Good interpersonal and human relations skills;ย 
Sound judgment in an emergency or volatile situation;ย 
Good powers of observation;ย 
Mental alertness;
Reliability; and
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position is responsible for the security of valuable property and supplies at times when employees are not present. In school district settings duties involve monitoring and attempting to prevent disruptive behavior. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Senior Security Worker or other higher level staff member. Does related work as required.ย 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)







Assists with overall safety/security surveillances;
Conducts periodic rounds, making sure all windows, doors and entrances to the building are closed and locked;
Monitors and attempts to prevent disruptive behavior in schools or County-owned or leased facilities in accordance with agency policies and procedures;
Prevents admittance of unauthorized persons to the premises; Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances;ย 
Prevents damage to property; Issues parking tickets on the streets adjacent to the building(s) to which assigned;ย 
Assists local fire department with fire alarms and bomb scares;
Monitors vehicle and personnel movement on school or County property;ย 
Opens all doors on schedule allowing public to enter; Writes simple activity reports concerning such incidents as vandalism, theft, or other disruptive activity;ย 
Checks valves, boiler pressure and water level to see that they are in operating order;
Confers with staff, adults and students (in schools) concerning safety measures;
Attends orientation, in-service training, and meetings relative to related rules, regulations, policies, conflict resolution and human relations;
Communicates with staff concerning employee or student (in schools) behavior.ย 












FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of safety and security procedures as related to buildings and grounds; good knowledge of the physical plant and grounds on which employed; ability to enforce departmental rules and regulations; ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations; ability to ascend stairs and walk/traverse moderate distances swiftly; ability to write simple incident reports; ability to operate two-way radios; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students (when applicable) and the public; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to check valves, boiler pressure and water level to see that they are in operating order; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.ย 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Current registration as a Security Guard with the New York State Department of State.
If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.ย 



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must meet all requirements for the following qualifications to be approved for examination and/or appointment:ย 

TRAINING/EDUCATIONย 
Graduation from high school OR possession of an equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education OR military or law enforcement background that is appropriately documented as successful experience.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE
6 months work experience as a security guard OR 6 months experience involving the direct supervision of youth OR 6 months experience in law enforcement or military.ย 
Supervisory experience None required.ย 
License/ Certification None required.ย 


OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must obtain New York State Security Guard certification within the first six months of employment and maintain same as a condition of employment.
Must pass a Child Abuse Recognition course within the first six months of employment.ย 
Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements.ย
