What does a Coating Process Engineer do?

A Coating Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes used to apply coatings to materials, such as metals, plastics, or glass. This role involves selecting appropriate coating materials, developing application techniques, troubleshooting production issues, and ensuring quality standards are met. Coating Process Engineers work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing, to improve product durability, appearance, and performance. They also collaborate with other engineers and production teams to implement new technologies and process improvements.

What is the difference between Coating Process Engineer vs Coating Technician?

AspectCoating Process EngineerCoating Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; certifications may include Six Sigma or process improvementHigh school diploma or associate degree; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing coating processes in manufacturing facilitiesOperating coating equipment, performing quality checks on coated products
Industry UsageUsed across industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics for process developmentCommonly found in manufacturing plants performing coating application tasks

The Coating Process Engineer focuses on developing and improving coating processes, requiring technical degrees and process knowledge. In contrast, the Coating Technician handles the day-to-day application of coatings, often with on-the-job training. Both roles are essential in manufacturing but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

What are some common challenges faced by Coating Process Engineers, and how can they effectively address them?

Coating Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent coating quality, optimizing process parameters, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Variations in raw materials, environmental conditions, or equipment performance can impact the final product. To address these challenges, engineers use statistical process control, collaborate closely with quality assurance, and regularly review process data to identify improvement areas. Continuous communication with production teams and suppliers is essential for quick problem resolution and maintaining high standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Coating Process Engineer, and why are they important?

A Coating Process Engineer typically requires a degree in chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field, along with a solid understanding of coating technologies and manufacturing processes. Familiarity with process control systems, analytical tools, and industry-specific standards or Six Sigma certification is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for optimizing processes and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and continuous process improvement in a competitive manufacturing environment.

Job description

StepBeyond Solutions recruits for EMS SMT Electronics Manufacturing A San Jose EMS is seeking a Conformal Coating Process Engineer Job Title: Conformal Coating Process Engineer Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Conformal Coating Process Engineer to join our team, specializing in Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA). This role will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in developing, qualifying, and optimizing conformal coating processes to enhance PCB reliability against environmental challenges. The engineer will drive high-yield production, troubleshoot defects, and manage automated selective coating systems. Key Responsibilities: Process Development & Optimization: Define and validate coating application parameters, including spray patterns, atomization, nozzle performance, and viscosity management to ensure high-quality results. Equipment Management: Program, maintain, and troubleshoot automated selective coating machines to optimize production efficiency. Material Selection: Evaluate and select suitable coating materials (acrylic, silicone, urethane, parylene, UV-curable) based on environmental requirements such as thermal, chemical, and moisture resistance. Quality Assurance & Troubleshooting: Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on defects (e.g., de-wetting, cracking) and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to enhance product quality. Masking Strategy: Establish masking procedures and jigs to ensure precise coating application while preventing coverage on designated keep-out areas (e.g., connectors, test points). New Product Introduction (NPI): Support new product initiatives by defining coating requirements, acceptance criteria, and conducting Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews. Documentation & Training: Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), process sheets, and training materials for production operators. Required Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Materials Science preferred). Experience: Minimum of 3 years of process engineering experience in PCBA, with a focus on conformal coating in high-reliability environments. Industry Standards: In-depth knowledge of IPC standards (IPC-CC-830, IPC-A-610 Class 2 & 3, J-STD-001). Technical Skills: Proficient with selective coating equipment, such as PVA and Nordson ASYMTEK, as well as curing ovens. Material Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of solvent-based and UV-cured chemistry. Preferred Skills: Lean/Six Sigma certification. SMTA Certified Process Engineer. Experience with automated optical inspection (AOI) for conformal coating applications. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand or walk on the manufacturing floor to monitor processes. Capable of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators. Occasional lifting of equipment or boards weighing up to 25 lbs. If you meet the qualifications and are passionate about enhancing the reliability of electronic components, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity to drive innovation in our manufacturing processes.
