Job description

JOB SUMMARY: To oversee all aspects of store operations to meet Co-op goals for sales, margins, labor, and customer service. To serve as a member of the management team and to support the achievement of the Co-op's "Ends" policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Duties:
  • Establish store readiness standards and compliance.
  • Develop efficient and effective store opening and closing procedures.
  • Handle or delegate any equipment or physical store problems.
  • Observe proper procedures for handling shoplifting, theft, robbery, and inappropriate behavior.
  • Follow proper steps in the event of an injury or an emergency situation.
  • Perform spot checks regularly throughout the store.
  • Category management: Institute and oversee the category management program.
  • Space allocation: Set standards and approve space allocation.
  • Work to foster and promote the co-op's pricing image.
  • Projects: Coordinate and support department managers in department-level projects, assist in planning and implementation, coordinate internal and external resources, and integrate programs storewide.
  • Ensure compliance with all store policies as interpreted by the General Manager in a firm and fair manner.
  • Take the lead in identifying, solving, and advocating for whole-store operational-level projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, permits, licenses, and health regulations.

Operations:
  • Ensure that department managers have the training and resources necessary to fulfill their responsibilities.
  • Ensure that communications to staff are clear, direct, and respectful.
  • Model supportive and participative leadership qualities, promoting staff development, team building, and motivating staff to achieve departmental goals.
  • Participate in establishing goals and objectives for the organization.
  • Lead store management team meetings; participate in store operations management meetings, and co-op leadership meetings.
  • Ensure labor contract compliance and compliance with all other store policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws: business licenses, permits, health regulations, security, etc.
  • Ensure the smooth flow of store operations on a day-to-day basis. Arrange for coverage of vacant shifts as necessary.
  • Conduct store audits for feedback to department managers.
  • Coordinate and ensure accurate store and department inventories.
  • Ensure useful store-wide communication channels and that all departments hold regular meetings.
  • Coordinate remodels, resets, significant repairs, and maintenance projects with appropriate people.
  • Ensure safety and security daily.
  • Practical communication skills to listen and to give clear directions in English.
  • Write simple correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to customers and employees.
  • Become familiar with membership information and must be able to provide this information to current and prospective members.

Financial Accountability:
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual store and department budgets, including sales, gross, labor cost (%), net profit, capital expenditures, and store expenses.
  • Work with Department Managers to ensure departments meet sales, margin, and labor goals.
    • Monitor costs and ensure appropriate purchasing practices.
    • Monitor labor costs and ensure they comply with the approved budget.
  • Effectively utilize or develop reports with a full understanding of financial terms and retail equations used in Franklin Community Co-op's grocery retail management systems to monitor financial activities at the store level to meet financial goals.

Mathematical Skills
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals using units of American money, weight measurement, and volume.

Administration:
  • Ensure a strong management presence in the store at all times (including coverage for department managers and PICs).
  • Working members: Assist in the training and supervision of working members
  • Daily priorities: Provide support for front-line staff throughout the store and guidance and direction as required. Supervise maintenance personnel - set goals, tasks, and training to meet standards for safety and cleanliness of physical market.
  • Attend management team meetings and ensure that all departments hold regular meetings.
  • Foster a positive work environment for all staff.
  • Ensure that performance standards are set for all staff.
  • Supervise significant personnel actions of the assigned departments including hiring, evaluating, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Ensure that staff receives on-the-job training and that every department has training plans in place that are consistent store-wide and in alignment with Co-op goals.
  • Monitor deviations from budget, take corrective action, and report actions taken.
  • Coordinate quarterly inventory of the store.
  • Participate in development of the annual business plan and annual operating and capital budgets for departments.

Customer Service:
  • Ensure a high standard of customer service store-wide according to established customer service vision and standards.
  • Ensure consistency for shopping and stocking efficiency.
  • Monitor overall store conditions, sales, and labor to ensure goals for customer service and profitability are met and make recommendations to the General Manager regarding changes in operational policies and procedures.
  • Have a working knowledge of cash register use and procedures.
  • Spend a minimum of 50% of their time on the sales floor.

    1. At least 5 years of retail management experience.
    2. Supervisory experience: hiring, training, motivating, scheduling.
    3. Ability to read financial statements: experience in establishing margins and pricing.
    4. Organized; consistently follows through on commitments.
    5. Knowledge of and experience with category management.
    6. Knowledge of natural products industry.
    7. Excellent communication skills, ability to provide clear directions

Education and Experience
  • At least five years of management experience: hiring, training, evaluating, coaching and developing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 5 years of experience developing and implementing budgets; meeting sales, labor and margin goals.
  • Knowledge of current trends in the natural foods industry.
  • Experience serving the public, providing excellent customer service, and an ability to project a friendly, outgoing personality with communications respectful of diversity in customers, staff and vendors.
