Job description

The objective of the Student Programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with "real world" work experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company's products, processes and procedures. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands-on work experience in a technical environment. In addition, Nexteer Automotive gains the opportunity to find new talent to enhance productivity while providing students exposure to full-time career opportunities.
Job Requisition Introductory Paragraph:
This position will allow the Student to perform various Environmental Engineering tasks including, but not limited to, collection of environmental data from plants and input into various corporate databases for use in US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) / MI Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) reporting; assist with recycling programs; assist with waste disposal profiling, characterization and disposal; manage waste manifest tracking and reporting; and perform weekly waste and stormwater inspections. Also assisting with data collection and analysis for sustainability reporting.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
It is the responsibility of the Environmental Parallel Co-Op to complete the following environmental engineering tasks with assistance as needed from the Environmental Group:
  • Monthly Updates of all project work at the combined Facilities & Environmental Staff Meeting
  • Monthly in-depth updates at the Environmental Group Staff Mtg
  • Participate in and attend all Environmental Group Staff Meetings and Events (per school schedule)
  • Revise our sitewide Renewable Operating (air) Permit (ROP) Equipment Maps and various other spill plan maps using AutoCAD or similar
  • Complete weekly preventative maintenance (PM) Log and chemical usage data collection, recording and tracking to support the ROP
  • Tracking of emergency generators and review of run times each month
  • Assist with Stack Testing on process equipment in the plants
  • Assist with Recycling projects
  • Coordinate Electronics Recycling Pickups
  • Take MI Department of EGLE Storm Water Program - Industrial Storm Water Certified Operator Training class to become a certified stormwater operator, thereby being able to do daily/weekly/monthly checks - back up for group
  • Assist with Earth Day Activities
  • Assist with Crushed Concrete testing and re-use on site, and work with Facilities on testing and evaluating volumes of concrete to be removed.
  • Assist with preparation of regulatory and sustainability reports
  • Perform weekly waste area inspections
  • Assist with characterization and disposal of obsolete materials on site.
  • Work with Waste & Recycling Engineer to develop alternate recyclers for our byproducts and to develop alternate recycling processes and to support our Standardized Recycling Label Program
  • Cover for Environmental Engineers as needed

Requirements:
  • Candidate must be attending a 2-year college or 4-year university local to Saginaw
  • Candidate must be pursuing a bachelor's in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies & Sustainability, Ag studies, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • Candidate must know/willing to learn AutoCAD or similar
  • Candidate must be able to work 20-32 hours during Fall and Winter semesters
    • Up to 40 in the summer
  • Must have cumulative 2.7 GPA on 4.0 scale
  • Must be a full-time student (12 or more credits) during Fall and Winter semesters
  • Candidate must have right to work in the US and not require current or future sponsorship
