Job Description

The Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician performs field and laboratory testing of construction materials, carefully documents results, and supports quality assurance on active construction projects. You will review civil, architectural, and structural plans, conduct tests on soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and masonry, and ensure all work aligns with project specifications and applicable standards. In this role, you maintain and calibrate testing equipment, use laboratory information management systems to record data, and communicate findings to project teams while helping to train less experienced technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Review civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications to prepare for field observations on construction sites.
  • Perform field observations on active construction projects to monitor compliance with project plans and specifications.
  • Document field activities, observations, and testing results in a clear, detailed, and accurate manner.
  • Compare field observations and test results against project plans and specifications, noting any conformance or deviations.
  • Conduct field testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout to verify compliance with applicable standards, DOT requirements, and project specifications.
  • Perform concrete testing, including sampling, slump tests, air content, temperature measurements, and preparation of test cylinders or beams.
  • Conduct rebar inspections to verify size, spacing, placement, and conformance with structural drawings and specifications.
  • Perform inspections and testing of structural steel, structural concrete, masonry, and roadway construction as required by project scope.
  • Use Metafield® and other field and laboratory information management systems to record, manage, and transmit testing results in a timely manner.
  • Prepare thorough and professional inspection and testing reports for internal review and client distribution.
  • Communicate field and laboratory testing results to Construction Services and Geotechnical Project Management staff, general contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with project teams to clarify testing requirements, resolve discrepancies, and support project quality objectives.
  • Provide coaching and training to less experienced technician staff in proper testing, inspection, and documentation procedures.
  • Maintain, clean, and calibrate field and laboratory equipment in accordance with industry codes and standards.
  • Ensure all testing equipment is in excellent working condition and properly calibrated to support accurate and reliable test results.
  • Follow established safety practices and procedures while working on active construction sites and in laboratory environments.
  • Handle and transport field and laboratory samples and equipment, including lifting items weighing approximately 40 to 50 pounds.
  • Travel to various project sites, including out-of-town and occasional overnight assignments, to perform testing and inspection services.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions while performing field testing and inspections.
  • Interact professionally and tactfully with all members of the design and construction team, including site laborers, project owners, site superintendents, architects, design engineers, and project managers.

Essential Skills

  • 1 or more years of experience in construction materials testing and inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials.
  • Hands-on experience with construction materials testing, including soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and masonry mortar/grout.
  • Proficiency in concrete testing methods, including field sampling and laboratory procedures.
  • Experience with rebar inspection and verification of structural reinforcement.
  • Experience with structural steel inspection, structural concrete inspection, and roadway inspection.
  • Strong report writing skills for preparing clear, detailed, and professional inspection and testing reports.
  • Effective communication skills in English, including speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Ability to routinely lift 40 to 50 pounds, including field and laboratory samples and equipment.
  • Ability to work and maneuver equipment, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites.
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to travel out-of-town, typically overnight, for short-duration assignments.
  • Understanding of professionalism and tact when interacting with diverse members of the design and construction team.
  • Competence in using Metafield® and/or other field and laboratory information management systems to record testing results.
  • Ability to calibrate field and laboratory equipment in accordance with industry codes and standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Field Supervisor and/or Supervising Field Technician experience (preferred).
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) certifications, including Field Testing Grade I, Strength Testing Technician, Laboratory Technician, Concrete Construction Inspector, Masonry Field Testing, and Aggregate Testing.
  • NICET Level II or higher in Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
  • International Code Council (ICC) Special Inspector certifications in Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, and Soils.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) certifications in Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete.
  • Familiarity with construction practices and field services related to concrete testing, rebar inspection, structural steel inspection, and roadway inspection.
  • Experience working with construction materials, including structural steel, structural concrete, and masonry.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in testing and documentation.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and maintaining current certifications through a credential incentive or similar program.
