Job Description
Atlas's New York/New Jersey Special Inspection team is growing, and we are seeking an experienced CMT Special Inspector 4 to perform senior-level special inspections on active construction sites throughout the tri-state area. This is a field-based, hourly position reporting out of our Avenel, NJ location. The ideal candidate independently performs special inspections across multiple disciplines in accordance with Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code and applicable New Jersey requirements and is able to mentor junior inspectors.
Core Responsibilities
  • Perform special inspections on active construction/project sites throughout New York and New Jersey in accordance with Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code and applicable New Jersey codes and standards.
  • Independently perform special inspections across multiple disciplines, including reinforced concrete, structural masonry, structural steel and high-strength bolting, structural welding, spray-applied fireproofing/firestopping, and soils.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, project manuals, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate daily field reports documenting observations, findings, and inspection activities.
  • Communicate directly with clients, project managers, engineers, and NYC DOB/local building officials regarding inspection status, observations, and findings.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior Special Inspectors (Special Inspector I-III).
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable building codes, standards, and Atlas quality requirements.
  • Implement Atlas� Think 12 Safety Philosophy and follow all Corporate Health and Safety policies and procedures.

You'll thrive here if you have
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent; relevant technical/engineering coursework.
  • Significant verified field experience performing special inspections at a senior level.
  • Multiple active ICC Special Inspector certifications relevant to the categories inspected.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and occasional overtime as needed.

Preference will be given to candidates with multiple active technical credentials, including
  • ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector
  • ICC Structural Masonry Special Inspector
  • ICC Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector (S1)
  • ICC Structural Welding Special Inspector (S2)
  • ICC Spray-Applied Fireproofing Special Inspector
  • ICC Soils Special Inspector
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • NJ DCA Special Inspector License (any category)
  • New York State Professional Engineer (PE)
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Field-based role covering active job sites throughout the New York/New Jersey tri-state area, reporting out of Avenel, NJ.
  • Ability to lift, move, push, and pull 30 to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to occasionally kneel and squat.
  • Self-driven multitasker with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision on active job sites.
  • Ability to document, prepare, and submit observation data using a smartphone or tablet.
  • Ability to clearly provide and receive detailed information through oral and written communication.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to job sites throughout New York and New Jersey.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check and motor vehicle record check.
  • Ability to follow Construction Site Safety Precautions.

    The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state's law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
