What is a Clo3D job?

A Clo3D job involves using Clo3D software to create digital garment designs, simulations, and patterns for fashion, apparel, or textile industries. Professionals in this role often work as 3D fashion designers, pattern makers, or technical designers, helping brands visualize and refine clothing before production. Responsibilities typically include creating virtual prototypes, adjusting fit and materials, and collaborating with designers and manufacturers. Clo3D specialists are in demand in fashion, gaming, and virtual retail industries, where realistic digital garments are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Clo3D position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clo3D Specialist, you need expertise in 3D garment visualization, digital pattern making, and a solid understanding of apparel design principles, often supported by a degree in fashion or textile design. Proficiency in the CLO 3D software, familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, and experience with rendering tools are typically expected. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are vital soft skills that help in interpreting design briefs and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills are essential for creating realistic digital prototypes efficiently and bridging the gap between design and production in the fashion industry.

What are some common challenges a Clo3D Specialist faces when collaborating with design and production teams?

A Clo3D Specialist often navigates the challenge of accurately interpreting designers’ visions into digital 3D garments while ensuring technical feasibility for production teams. Balancing creative aesthetics with material constraints and ensuring compatibility between digital mock-ups and real-world manufacturing processes are typical aspects of the job. Effective communication and the ability to provide actionable feedback to both designers and pattern makers are essential to align expectations and streamline workflow. Additionally, managing tight deadlines for virtual sampling and handling frequent design revisions can require strong organizational skills and adaptability. Overcoming these challenges is key to producing high-quality digital prototypes and supporting a smooth product development cycle.

Job description

The Opportunity

We’re expanding and as our business grows and our product range broadens, we’ve found it necessary to make significant investments in our organization. Similarly, we’re investing in our people and are looking for someone who’s personally supportive of our customers and equally driven to deliver exceptional products for our market.

We’re seeking a highly skilled apparel Pattern Maker, already experienced in 3D design or ready and excited to learn. Have a minimum of 3-5 years commercial experience as a full-time pattern maker, with solid skills in first pattern development, fit and posture adjustments, and grading and altering rules. Technical apparel experience is ideal. We’re on the Gerber and Browzwear platforms, but will consider other experience for the right person.

Unlike almost all commercial apparel companies, both our design office and our factory are here in Brooklyn, and our Pattern Makers work hands-on and in great detail with the manufacturing team and the production floor. This is a full-time, in-office position within the design department that reports directly to the Director of Product Development. Excellent opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

The Pattern Maker is responsible for:

  • Developing patterns from initial concept through production, working closely with designers, other Pattern Makers, technical designers, and sample makers
  • Creating and maintaining patterns in Gerber AccuMark with a high level of accuracy
  • 3D pattern development, fit visualization and adjustment in VStitcher, including creating presentation materials
  • Executing pattern revisions based on fittings, prototype reviews, wash tests, and team feedback
  • Preparing and maintaining pattern documentation, including fit and construction notes and revision histories
  • Grading, altering, and size range development in collaboration with the Senior Pattern Maker
  • Collaborating in fittings, evaluating balance and proportion, and overall fit on the body
  • Providing guidance to, and receiving feedback from, sample shop staff on pattern quality and optimization
  • Occasional sewing and assembling samples and mockups to validate pattern intent and construction
  • Identifying and troubleshooting pattern and construction issues, including as defined in tech packs and sketches
  • Refining patterns for production
  • Creating markers for cutting and estimating fabric utilization
  • Maintaining organization of pattern and sample libraries

Job Requirements:

  • 3-5+ years of experience in commercial patternmaking
  • Proficiency in Gerber AccuMark (preferred)
  • Advanced 3D design skills in VStitcher or CLO3D, or basic knowledge and a strong desire to learn
  • Ability to work in Adobe Illustrator and MS 365 apps (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Solid understanding of garment construction, fit, and the human form
  • Ability to bring the highest level of accuracy and attention to detail and organization to all tasks and documentation
  • Ability to take direction and iterate quickly
  • Relevant degree, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Hands-on experience in sewing, sample making and garment construction
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative work style
  • Adept at time management, and ability to prioritize, plan and meet deadlines

Additional Valuable Skills:

  • Experience with technical apparel
  • Production marker making experience
  • Experience working in PLM systems
  • Working fluency in Mandarin
  • Experience working in a task management platform such as Asana, Monday or ClickUp
