Job description

Location: Ishpeming, MI
Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Health and Safety Specialist at our Tilden Mine site. This position provides safety service and support to the mine personnel and is responsible for maintaining and improving employee and company security.
Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Ensures that a safety-focused work environment is maintained.
  • Directs and coordinates the development of continuous improvement plans to improve safety throughout the company through teambuilding, communication, personal coaching, vision-setting exercises and training sessions.
  • Responsible for correspondence between Cliffs Michigan Operations and MSHA, as well as any other governmental safety agencies (i.e. state mine inspector).
  • Assist in the site's emergency response program and emergency response teams.
  • Responsible for finding and organizing safety information from online resources. Be up-to-date on mining incidents, their causes, and any resolutions made. Acts as a readily available resource of safety information for supervisors to use when preparing and presenting employee safety meetings.
  • Responsible for documenting any safety incident or complaint and taking the appropriate steps to make the situation as safe as possible.
  • Facilitates safety inspectors during a property inspection
  • Coordinate and direct incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action development for all incidents at the site.
  • Ensures that any work hazard complaints or concerns are thoroughly followed through and acted upon in an appropriate manner.
  • Promotes and encourages high safety standards between all departments, sections, and crews throughout the company. Interact effectively with senior and middle management, hourly employees and union officials.
  • Aids in the administration of corporate, property, and departmental policies, procedures, and systems related to safety.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years site safety or safety training department.
  • B.S. in safety, engineering, earth sciences, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in a unionized environment.

Relocation assistance may be considered for highly qualified candidates from outside the local area.
