What is a classical teacher?

A Classical Teacher is an educator who instructs students using the classical education model, which emphasizes the study of literature, languages (often Latin and Greek), history, and the liberal arts. This approach is rooted in the traditions of Western education and seeks to cultivate critical thinking, eloquence, and moral virtue. Classical Teachers often guide students through the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric) and sometimes the quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy), aiming to provide a well-rounded and rigorous academic foundation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a classical teacher?

To thrive as a Classical Teacher, you need a solid grounding in classical languages (such as Latin and Greek), classical literature, and a relevant teaching credential or degree. Familiarity with classical education curricula, traditional assessment methods, and digital classroom tools is typically required. Strong communication, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to inspire a love for classical studies in students are standout soft skills. These abilities enable effective teaching, foster student engagement, and preserve the rigor and tradition of a classical education.

How does a classical teacher collaborate with colleagues to enhance the learning experience?

Classical Teachers often work closely with other faculty members, especially within humanities departments, to develop interdisciplinary projects and ensure curriculum consistency. Collaboration can include co-planning lessons, sharing resources, and participating in departmental meetings focused on classical languages, literature, or history. This teamwork not only enriches the student experience but also provides professional support and opportunities for educators to continue learning and refining their teaching methods.
