Job description

Position: Lifeguard (Main Campus)
Department: Campus Recreation Aquatics
Status: Part Time
Position Summary:
This position ensures the safety of patrons within the Nathan Johnson Natatorium and/or Keith Hills Pool by preventing and responding to emergencies. The position works within the department of Campus Recreation at Campbell University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons within designated facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Always presents a professional appearance and attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants by enforcing pool rules and responding appropriately to emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively with patrons and other staff.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and progress records.
  • Attend staff meetings and required training sessions.
  • Promote a positive and encouraging atmosphere at all times.
  • Uphold, and abide by, Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, and Information Security including HIPAA, FERPA and other state and federal mandates.

Education/Experience:
  • High School Diploma/GED. Less than high school with 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified will be considered.
  • Current Lifeguard certification.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Strong swimming skills and water safety techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Be self-motivated, in order to set a good example and be a good role model.
  • Be well organized and have excellent time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal and written.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and attention to detail are essential.
  • Work effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
  • Exercise sound judgment in complex and new situations.
