We are seeking a Soils Laboratory Technician to join our laboratory team in Houston, Texas. This is a full-time, hands-on role focused on laboratory testing in support of commercial, industrial, retail, municipal, and transportation projects. This position is ideal for individuals looking to start or grow a career in construction materials testing, civil engineering, or geotechnical services.

Compensation: $18-20/hour. Earning potential can be higher for experienced technicians. 
Location: Houston, TX
FLSA Exemption: Non-Exempt
Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours/week (schedule may vary based on workload)

What you'll be doing:

  • Receive, prepare, and test geotechnical and construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Perform laboratory testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and TxDOT standards, including (but not limited to):
  • Visual Classification of Soils
  • Moisture Content
  • Atterberg Limits
  • Sieve Analysis
  • Standard and Modified Proctor Compaction
  • Swell Testing
  • Compressive Strength (Concrete Cylinders)
  • Aggregate Gradation and Properties
  • Accurately record test data, calculations, and results and report findings to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Assist with sample tracking, documentation, and report preparation.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and work areas in compliance with safety, quality, and accreditation requirements.
  • Follow CMT safety policies, laboratory procedures, and quality control standards.

What you have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized procedures.
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Willingness to work in a laboratory environment and support team goals.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers and supervisors.

What will make you stand out:

  • 1+ year of experience in a construction materials testing laboratory.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, and TxDOT testing methods.
  • Coursework or degree in civil engineering, construction management, geology, or a related field.
  • Interest in career advancement within construction materials testing or geotechnical services.

Preferred Certification(s) – Texas Relevant

  • NICET Construction Materials Testing (Soils, Concrete, or Asphalt – Level I or II preferred)
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) – (Concrete Strength Testing, Aggregate, Aggregate Base – preferred but not required)

Certifications can be obtained after hire; CMT supports employee certification and training.
