M&J Engineering is seeking a Design Engineer (Civil/Transportation) to join our Rhode Island team. The ideal candidate will assist in the preparation of design plans, calculations, and technical reports while working closely with senior staff and project managers to ensure successful project delivery.

Responsibilities
  • With little or no supervision of the Project Manager, prepares and completes design plans and specifications including quality review, while ensuring that these applications are complete and accurate, and adhere to technical standards, and other planning considerations.
  • Conducts field investigations and site assessments as appropriate.
  • Communicates effectively with staff and other stakeholders, as needed.
  • Perform related tasks involving analysis, specialized software and report preparation..
  • Acts as the Company representative with the client and selected subcontractors during the program execution.
  • Negotiate changes to the scope of work with the client and key subcontractors.
  • Responsible for following up on instructions and commitments associated with the project. May participate in negotiations with regulatory agencies and in public meetings in support of clients.
  • Assists PM to oversee establishment of Project Execution Plan, Health and Safety Plan, Quality Assurance/Quality Control Plan, and other documents as required.
  • Establishes the program requirements for all areas of the project and monitors the draft and final deliverables for adherence to these criteria.
  • Assists Project Manager in the planning, and supervision of technical teams and supports the execution of all business, technical, fiscal, and administrative functions of the assigned project.
  • Assigns responsibility for executing project plans to key subordinates after careful assessment of how to utilize their qualifications and strengths. Provides input to performance reviews and development plans for subordinates.
  • Field responsibilities may include labor relations, local procurement, and payroll operations, etc., if required.
  • Mobilizes company resources, through liaison with support departments, other offices, or subsidiaries, to create project teams capable of completing effective, quality work.
  • Discusses the qualifications required of the key project positions in specific detail with the profit center and department managers.
  • Promotes technical and commercial excellence on the project through application of Quality Assurance processes.
  • Monitors and reports to management on the progress of all project activity within the program, including significant milestones, and any conditions, which would affect project cost or schedule.
  • Establishes weekly meetings with teams in the field, to review project status and formulate action items.
  • Participate in project performance review meetings and discussions.
  • Participate in corporate business development activities.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field required. E.I.T. (Engineer-in-Training) certification preferred, P.E. license and/or Marine Engineering a plus.

5 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in transportation or infrastructure design. Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Familiarity with Rhode Island DOT (RIDOT) design standards and procedures preferred. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
